Z Fleeced Quintet From Base

Grand Island With Two
; ; Omaha Sleuths.
Five jolly youths, garbed in neat
I British nival uniforms, have left
J Omaha and are on their way richer
to be sure but not as much richer
as when thev left.
I Friday Base Ball Headquarters
; in Omaha was agog witn roe taie
of how these jolly tars unloaded
t cloaks of house-cat fur on umanans
!,as priceless sealskins and fled the
' '' citv - i "
' Packy Gaughn, Bill Uvick, Billy
! Betts, Fred Smith, Bill fox and
others in close touch with Base Ball
Headauartera had carted with per
; fectly good coin of the realm for
these sealskins.
Hit the Trail
'' During the afternoon, they learned
' of the dupe and with Detectives
- Danbaum and Palmtag hit the trail.
' Straight to the Union hotel, 1025
Mason street, where the British tars
had stopped, the victims went. The
sleuths raided the hotel and there
lost th aeent.
i But the Omahans were not to be
thwarted:"They learned the fur sales-
, men had taken the road to urana
Island.
Hastily arming themselves with
1 revolvers and filline their pockets
! with ammunition the fleeced Oma-
; hans climbed into Packy Gaiighn s
car and gave chase.
J Through Grand Island the trail led
. them, on to Lincoln where they
' prowled the streets Friday night.
They Spy 'Em.
" At a busy downtown intersection
; they spied their quarry, slipped up to
. them .and motioned them to a side
street. '
"We want to talk business with
you," Billy Uvick told them.
The sailors had visions of more
fur sales and obeyed.
' Once in a dark section, the Oma
hans whipped out their pistols and
with menacing tones. demanded:
"We're wise to your game. Hand
us back ouf dough."
"Don't get excited," cahie back the
sailor boys.
"How much did you pay us?" they
asked Gaughn.
"Now Listen."
"Five hundred berries," said
Packy, and forthwith he was re-
turned his money. So also, did Uvick
and Nathan Miller get back their
$150 each, and the sesveral others in
. the party.
'Now listen, boys," pleaded the fur
salesmen, "don't start anything here
in town. We cleaned up over $20,000
there in Omaha at the stock yards
and along automobile row and we're
willing to give .you back yours. But
please don't start anything- here."
The quintet also told Gaughn they
had done a profitable business in two
. ' of Omaha's downtown office build-
ings.
The Omahans, so glad to get back
; their lost money, abandoned the
; naval quintet in their glee and drove
; back to Omaha, where they notified
I their -friends of their good fortune.
l Another ThrilL
Base ball headquarters was given
;'; another thrill and yesterday an
,'. other carload of fleeced fur buyers
t.j hit out for Grand Island, where, they
understood the quintet intended to
! be today.
; Gaughn said he understood from
i the sailors they had secured the fake
. J furs from the M. Sidell fur house
in Mew YoTk'City. They also sold
a quantity of woolen goods in Oma
I ha. it is said, and one of their pur-
chasers was chagrined when a tailor
( to whom he had taken the goods for
1 a suit to bemade, told him frankly
it was worthless.
According to M. Fitzgerald of the
American Jtxpress company, - the
shipment 'of bogus furs and woolen
goods arrived in Omaha July 3,. and
part . of these were forwarded to
Grand Island; - '"
Detectives Palmtag and Danbaum
refuse to give up hope of making an
arrest in the case. The quintet of
sailors. who gave, their' names as
Hugh and Charlie Stewart, Henry
and William Johnston and John
McMillan, paid the city clerk . $5
each for a license to sell furs in
Omaha.
Denies Husband Caught .
Mrs. Joe Hendruc this morning
denied her husband was caught in
the wholesale fur swindle.
"I have a new coat, she said, ''and
I tlon't want any of my friends
thinking it's just cat or rat fur. It's
real add it was bought and paid for.".
Captain Van Deusen, head of the
detective bureau, said this morning
the fur salesmen were operating a
legitimate business, and that he told
their victims when they appeared
at his office to complain that County
Attorney Shotwell refused to file a
complaint against the fur salesmen.

ciety, distributing literature, preach
ing the gospel and organizing Sun
dav schools in the districts where
there are no organized churches.
Rev. Mr. Olson recently drove out
of Omaha for a tour through Ne
braska. He has been in this work for
20 years, and in the last four years
since he got his automobile, he has
traveled more than 34,000 miles. His
home is now in Ottawa. Kan., where
his wife and seven children live.
Wife Says Hubby Put
Her to Work, Took Pay
When the dear old selective serv
ice act went into effect back in 1917,
Fred Marsh asked his wife, Frieda,
to quit her job, so he could plead for
exemption as the sole support of her
and their three children, she alleges
in a suit for divorce filed in district
court yesterday.
Soon after their marriage in 1914,
she says, he demanded that she go
to work and insisted that she turn
all her pay over to him. After the
war was over, he demanded that she
go back to work, she says. He also
treated her with such cruelty that her
health is ruined, she alleges.
Matters, at Work in
Pen, Ignores Marsha
The "cut direct" was given by
Thomas Matters, Omaha attorney,
now sojourning in the federal prison
at Leavenworth, to James Nickerson,
acting United States marshal here,
when Nickerson was in the penitea
tiary Friday, to deliver another
prisoner. 1
Matters would not look up from
his work in the prison clerk s office
to speak to the Omaha marshal.
Nickerson also saw M. L. Lueb
ben, sentenced for the same charge
as Matters; at work in the warden's
office.

Stock Salesman, Accused of
Using Mails to Defraud, 1
Returned From Hous
ton, Tex.
William A. McWhorter, arrested
in Houston, Tex., this week on
charges of using the mail to defraud
in $1,000,000 stock deals, will be
brought back to Omaha this morn
ing, according to his attorney, Judge
A. L. Sutton.
He will face trial about November.
McWhorter's bond was fixed at $25,
000, which he was unable to furnish.
Judge Sutton said he would make
efforts to have McWhorter's bond
reduced to $12,500, the sum a Los
Angeles judge set for Charles S.
Wohlberg and Jacob Masse, Mc
Whorter's associates, who were ar
rested on the coast.
Associate at Large.
McWhorter will be able to furnish
the reduced bond, Sutton stated.
William G. Chiplcy, a fourth man
indicted, is still at large.
The alleged fraudulent stock
deals with which the men are
charged are the William Berg Potash
and Missouri Valley Cattle Loan
and Finance companies' stock sales
Seach for McWhorter has been on
since May, when the indictment was
returned. He was then said to be
in Mexico, looking over his oil in
terests. Said to Be Broke.
Omahans believe him to be flat
broke after his period of high
finance. He formerly occupied a
magnificent home at Fifty-first and
Dodge, which he sold at the time his
wife obtained a divorce last fall, al
leging cruelty.
His wife is said to have refused a
$50,000 settlement he offered for a
reconciliation.
