Prediction of
Westingliouse
Is Justified
Nitrogen Plant, Receiving
Power From iagara Falls,
Established at Syracuse,
150 Miles Distant.

Whtn the Niagara FalU hydro
electric power plant was in course
of construction, George Westing
house invited to inspect it a contid-
erable company of men. some of
whom were of high professional at
tainment! and other who had aided
in. financing the proposition. The
governor of New York state thought
the enterprise of sufficient impor
tance for him to accept Mr. Westing
house's invitation.
At that time Mr. Westinghouse
said that when this plan is com
pleted, larpe industries will be estab
lished at Niagara Falls and in ad
dition to that the electric energy
which will be generated there will be
sufficient for lighting, heating and
power purposes for the city of Buf
falo. This energy will also be util
ized by and by. be said, for in
dustrial purposes in all western and
central New York. He thought it
likely that perhaps the greatest in
dustry which made use of hydro
electric energy would in time be es
tablished, as far east as Syracuse.

build nine more units from time to time,

Nature of Process.
American Inventors and men of science
are understood to have worked out a new
formula for securing nitrogen from tha
atmosphere. At one time the presump
tion was strong that we would be com
pel I fd In the United States to adopt tha
processes which are made use of In Nor
way whereby nitrogen is secured from tha
atmosphere. These processes were of im
portant avail to Germany when the Eu
ropean war was In progress. In fact had
Germany been enable ta secure nitrogen
by ma&lng use ef the Norway prooeas and
presumably by securing some nitrogen ,
from Norway it wo a Id have been impossi
ble for It ta have carried on tha war.
Tke new process, tha details of which '
are net fully known, will. It 1a understood,
make It possible to take nitrogen out of
tba atmosphere and convert it ta com
mercial use at much leas coat than the
Norway process. Yet the Norway process
waa first suggested by the results ob
tained by an American who otillsled hy-dro-electrio
energy in such manner aa to
exrrart nitrogen from the atmosphere.
Thla Inventor, however, waa unable ts
secure financial aid. The bankers and
men of finance turned their backa upon
Bis appeal for assistance. There hap
pened in tha United States at that time
a small grasp of men of science who were
Norwegians. They were much impressed
fey thla Americas discovery and received
permission to experiment with H In Nor
way. The water power in Norway ti
abundant. It was utilised to create elec.
trie energy and la thia way the Nor
wegians secured to commercial advantage
atmospheric nitrogen.
Different Process.
Now the establishment of this new and
large plant at Syracuse appears to havs
been based upon discoveries and inven
tions made by Americans which differ
from the Norwegian process. The indus
try will, when It ts completed, be recog
nized aa the largest single user of the
olectrle current in western and central
New York. Thia current will be delivered
from Niagara Falla, which la 150 miles
distant.
Soon after the Niagara Talis plant was
completed Sfr. Weetinghoase'e prediction
that laraw industries would be speedily
established there was found to be correct.
Tha discovery mads by Hall of a process
far manufacturing- aluminum by artificial
means and by tha tllisattoa of nyaro
lectrie enersv waa almost eemeident In
point of time with the completion of the

minum Industry was established at
Niagara and it has become one of the
great Amsrlcaa industries.
A little while after this aluminum plant
waa established and put In operation Dr.
ft. a. Aehesen, who had discovered ear.
bornndum and was manufacturing tt at
Pittsburgh, decided that H would be nec
eeeary to secure a much larger amount
of electric energy than he could obtain
at Pittsburgh. Ho therefore established
plant at Niagara Falla, but whan he
asked for the. delivery of the equivalent
of a thousand horse power In electric en
rgv to his plant, he met with some hesi
tation, thrra being doubt as whether sa
large an amount In a slngls unit could
be furnished by the company. It was,
however, famished and aut of that grew
one of the greatest Americaa industries.
With it Is associated Mr. Mellon, now sec
retary of the treasury, who greatly aid
ed In f.nancing and building up thia Industry.

Cattle Receipts of cattle were light
again today, only l.zoo head being re
ported In, and tha market continued to
show improvement. Steers ruled HCMIc
higher, while on cows snd heifers gains
of mostly llffl&e were quoted. For the
two days desirable steers are 11040c blah
er and some medium grades srs up sven
more than that, but real plain kinds did
not show much of sny improvement. Cows
and heifers are 16 f 50c higher than at the
start of the week. Beat steere today
brought 18.1591.15. Feeder trade con
tinued dull and the market barely ateadr
for the week.

Chicago, July, 8. Government re
port istued after the close, forecast
the production of winter wheat at
574,000,000 bushels compared with
578.000,000 bushels, the December,
1920, estimate. Spring wheat wu es
timated at 235,000,000 bushels against
209,000,000 bushels in Dtcember,
1920. Corn was given at 3,123,000.000
bushels; December 1, 1920. at 3.Z3Z,
000,000 bushels. Oats. 1,329,000,000
bushels against 1,526.000,000 bushels
in December, 1920. Rye was placed
t 70,000.000 bushels and barley at
184,000,000 bushels.
Wheat closed strong and 1 to 1 3-4e
higher. Shortly after midday black
rust reports from Canada were re
ceived and these caused some buying,
despite a later denial of these re
ports. The selling earlier had been
overdone and there was a paucity of
offerings during the later trading.
Corn finished 1-Zc higher to J-4c
lower and oats were unchanged to
l-4c higher. Rye was 1 1-4 to 1 l-2c
higher and barley lc lower to lc
higher. Provisions showed little
chance. Local cash sales were 25,-
000 bushels wheat. 760,000 bushels
corn includine 750.000 bushels to ex
porters, 54,000 bushels oats and 1,500
bushels barley.
Watch Elevator Strike.
Ernest brokers say It is difficult to
get offers from local shippers, as they do
not ears to mass any more commitments
until the elevator situation improves.
There was not much interest in wheat.
Ths toss of the market was easy. There
was a general disposition en ths part of
recent havers to take profits. The gov
ernment report was to be posted after the
close.
Cm the dins there was seme buying for
northwest account and some or tne local
Interests that were more courageous than
ths rank and fits added te tnetr own
holdings. The hot weather reported in
the northwest waa regarded aa bullish.
Tha forecast ts for fair weather without
change In tha temperature ever the north
west Local receipts were heavier, the
estimate being lie care.
In eora the feature was ths apparent
firmness ef the July delivery.. This was
dus to ths buying by cash Interests, who
were removing hedges against cash eorn
sold for export overnight. There were
sales of 750,000 bushels corn to exporters
te go out ef here to Montreal late yes
terday and this morning. Montreal ex
porters were bidding strongly for mors
corn, but the lack of lake tonnage tended
to restrict some er the Business.
Receipts Fall Off.
Receipts are falling off, the estimate
being only for 13 ears, lato montns
wars quiet and easier. It was almost
entirely local trade, ths decline in
wheat and the fact that the government
renort la expected to be bearish Induced
selling. Rains were shown In parts of
the dry belt, but forecast la for fair
and continued warm weather. Deliveries
of 12.000 bushels on July contracts wers
reported.
Oats sxhtbftsd a steady undertone.
Local bulls wars mors confident and they
bought fairly good lines. Their pur
chases msda little Impression oa prices,
as commission houses had selling orders
of good volume which prevented the mar
ket from advancing. More attention ts
being paid to the deterioration in the crop
and threshing returns, which show a dis
appointing yield, as well aa lightweight
oats, which are attracting investors.
Weather conditions were Improved, rams
having fallen In sections ef the belt
where moisture was needed. Deliveries
on July contracts amounted to 17, 000
bushels. Country offerings to arrive were
reported aa fair. Receipts were freer, but
not heavy, the estimate being placed at
lit cars. London and Antwerp spot mar
kets held unchanged. Shipping demand
ke reir. -
Rye was dull. No aales were reported,
bnt No. 1 was quoted le over July price.

The Corn Products company was In the
market for contract grades of corn, for

New York, July 8. A familiar
process was witnessed on the stock
exchange when sharp reactions in
prices took place, mainly because of
unsettlement caused by the passing
of dividends. The action of the Ci
rectors of the United States Rub
ber company, in eliminating the com
mon dividend altogether was some
thing of an unpleasant surprise and
the passing of the dividend on Fisk
Rubber company, first preferred,
came as another forceful indication
of industrial depression. Had the
announcements came before the rise
early this week, it is possible that
the word would have passed without
any pronounced reflection in the run
of prices. The street was becoming
hardened to such developments.
Dividend Expected.
There had been some reports that the
dividend on United States Rubber was
in danger, but the majority opinion waa
in expectation ef a reduction to 14 a year
annual basis. This news did not come
out early enough on Thursday ts be an
Influence on the stock market, but from
the opening today selling was in evidence
and continued throunbout ths day. Not
only did the Industrials decline, but the
rails too, gave way. although to a less
pronounced extent.
The government crop report of July
shows a share depreciation in condition
of spring and winter wheat, but lodicatlona
oi a record crop, the condition being bet
ier man on any July l m the last 20
yeara
