Art being nothing more than a reproduction of nature, with an idealization of certain details or a permanance of certain beauties which are only temporary, the sense of what we call "perspective" is no ticeable in any painting or drawing. The two banks of a river on the sides of a road converge as they go toward the background of the pic ture, but while the space between thein actually decreases in the paint ing, it remains the same in real life the difference being that they only appear to converge in the latter. The word perspective means "seen along" and it is here that we find the feason for one of the most puzzling 'aspects of sight.. If we have two perfectly parallel lines, for example the tracks of a railroad, the portion of the tracks closest to our eyes appears to be many times further apart than that at a distance, for the angle vision as we see along the rails is constantly changing growing smaller as the distance in creases and thereby tending appar ently to bring the rails closer to gether. As we move, the angle is continually altered in direct ratio to our rate of progress, fr the impres sion of the rails impinges upon the eye, no matter how frequently we change our position. Although a person may be unat tractive in a physical or facial way, yet a far greater attraction may exist. The person whose character is right, whose disposition is pleasing, who is thoughtful and kind and sin cere, may have more true friends than the one whose claims for friend ship are mere physical charms. Sometimes girls with rather ugly faces become despondent, reaching the stage where they feel that no one in particular cares or them and it will never be possible to gain many friends. In this mood the girls become careless in dress- and sometimes as careless in conduct, believing that no matter how nice they may try to be their homely exterior may stand in the way of associates they desire. But it is mistaken attitude and a false deduction. A girl cannot afford to be lax in any way in her conduct. There are many persons to whom the fact that the girl is so above reproach is an incentive to know the trirl better and without realizing it a far greater friendship may result a m-i 1 ! Here are some of the superstition common in the United States and Canada regarding that spidor-like creature generally known as "daddy longlegs." Take him by one leg and say: Daddy longlegs, tell me where my cows are." He will point in the direction of the cattle with one of his other legs. Wish on a daddy long legs "for luck," Daddy longlegs brings good luck. It is bad luck to kill him. Say: "Tell me where my love is "and he will point in the required direction. Daddy longlegs gets his reputation from the fact that he is an arachnid; the name being from a Greek word meaning spider and used to designate the class to which both the true spider and dad dy longlegs belong. To all intents and purposes daddy longlegs is spider and a field spider so that, asso ciated with the harvest so that he and his near relations have, for long centuries, been known as "harvest men" when not spoken of under a more fanciful name. In England he is "harvestman," or "harvest spider," the name daddy longlegs being ap plied to the crane fly there. All spiders, according to Pliny, were much regarded by the Romans for purposes of divination and it was considered bad luck to kill one. Dad dy longlegs being a field spider, in timately connected with husbandy, is naturally the proper sort of spider to divine with in such a matter as find ing the cows. Naturally, also it is bad luck to kill such a gifted creature with us today as it was with the Ro mans 2,000 years ago or more. Like wise being -connected with the har vest, a creature, as it were, of the grain-spirit, a "harvestman," daddy longlegs brings good luck for he brings the harvest. While all over the country daddy longlegs is used to find the cows it is in a few places only that he is employed to find where one's love is. Such unfrequent use of him is outside his special function and is merely a remnant of the general use of the spider in di vination among the Romans. Although Wet, July Fourth Celebrations Were "Dry" Affairs Pawnee City, tteb., July 5. Spe cial.) The Fourth of July, although a very wet day, was a sort of "dry" affair around here. Rain spoiled most of the celebrations. Pawnee City did not celebrate. At Tecumsch, festivities were held downtown on the pavement instead of in the fair grounds as planned. Muddy roads kept scores of people . nway. At Sabctha, Kan., south of here, the same condition existed. At the new pleasure resort at Cromwell Lake park, south of Du bois, Neb., the celebration was called off. The management had advertised to celebrate on the fifth in case ot rain on the fourth, but owing to the fact that the park was still flood ed by high water from the Nemaha river, the program has been indcii- nitely postponed.
