Consternation fell upon Paris when the defeat of Georges Carpentier was signalled with white lights by airplanes on newspaper screens and by the other announcements. The crowd refused to believe the first bulletin telling of Carpentier being knocked out. The Associated Press flash, received at 8:32 o'clock tonight, wa$,the first to reach rxcs. Mine. Carpentier listened to the progress of the fight in the editorial rooms of the Petit Parisien. Her optimism did not fail until the fourth round. Vhen the word came her husband had taken the count she turned away and said: "Georges is defeated. I shall cancel my trip to the United states and await his re turn to me." Paris became saddened and de pressed, men, women and children stood in silence while they read how Carpentier had been completely out classed and outfought. The big army airplanes speedily appeared over the Place de la Concorde and the boulevards, displaying large white hehts as a sienal of defeat. President Millerand and his family at Elysee palace received a series of bulletins sent by the government wireless station at the Eiffel tower. The chief gathering place of the Americans was the i"lace de la Concorde, where the returns were re ceived blow by blow and given to the crowd in English and French on a huee screen. Dempsey s victory was received with wild cheering-by tne Americans who threw their hats m the air, while the French spectators looked on in silence. ' The Paris newspapers issued ex tras. Carpentier's wife, when seen later, said that the shock to her was very severe and her greatest grief was that she was not with Georges. Her only desire was that her husband return to her as soon as possible. She added proudly, however, "no matter what the result, he fought like a French man and a sportsman." London, July 2 Thousands watch ed the sky this evening for the color ed lights from a giant airship an nouncing the result which similarly were shown from the roof of a big department store, while the theaters and moving picture houses interrupt ed their shows to announce the American victory. London's French quarter, Soho, where Carpentier is a popular idol, was plunged in gloom tonight. Levinsky Loses to ir r ml Morns on roui Blow Tulsa, Okl.. July 3.
