Apron Strings.
"If your apron string becomes
loosened your true love is thinking
about you," is a common supersti
tion with unmarried young women.
This arises from the idea of the
ancients of the magical power of
knots to trammel and obstruct hu
man activities, physical and spirit
ual. In matters of love and mar
riage knots obstruct the relations
between a bride and groom and to
act as obstacles to the course of
true love.
Professor Frazer says that as
lately as 1718 "the parliament at
Bordeaux sentenced a person to be
burned alive for having spread deso
lation through a whole ( family by
means of knotted cords," and cites
a case in Scotland in 1705 where two
persons were sentenced, to death "for
stealing charmed knots in order,
thereby, to mar the wedded happi
ness of Spalding of Ashintilly."
These magic knots, you see, had to
be found and untied in order that
their baleful effects might cease and
the two persons who stole and se
creted them had thus prevented the
untieing.
Now the knot which holds your
apron string may be a charmed knot,
obstructing the thoughts of love. If
it comes untied of itself your lov
er's thoughts flow to you free and
unobstructed.
Far back in early classic days
examples of this superstition of ob
structive knots is found and it pre
vails today among nearly all the
savage tribes of Africa. It is primi
tive in its origin and based on home
opathic magic "like produces like."

as to the extent of her husband's
injuries, Mrs. H. H. Fickbohm, 2532

the Pullman conductor injured in
the Crawford wreck last week, left
Saturday for Hot Springs, S. D.,
where he is in the hospital.
No word has been received from
her by Omaha friends since her ar
rival there.
She will remain until her husband
is able to come home, she stated be

City Dads Told Movable Ice
Stations Ruining Pavement
William L. Randall, attorney, told
city commissioners yesterday that
movable ice stations used by the city
to distribute ice were not only ruin
ing pavement, but blocking traffic.
He declared they were allowed on
streets from noon until the next
morning. and that due to their great
weight they sank to great depth in
the heated asphalt pavement.
City Commissioner Hopkins said
he had received other similar com
plaints and that he would take steps
to see that the stations were left in
vacant lots in the future.
Madame Curie Is Honored

Wellesley, Mass., June 20. Mme.
Marie Currie, co-discoverer of rad
ium, received the degree of doctor
of science, the only honorary degree
ever conferred by Wellesley college,
at the commencement exercises to
day. Degrees in course were

Lincoln, June 20. (Special.) The
state administration continued its
drive against Nebraska tax slackers
today when W. H. Osborne, state
tax commissioner, in open letters to
county clerks asked for typewritten
copies of the minutes of meetings of
county commissioners.
This. Osborne explained, is for the
purpose of ascertaining the work
done by commissioners as equaliza
tion boards on taxation questions
and in order to give the state de
partment an opportunity to ascertain
if local politics is playing any part
in the assessments levied by county
boards on certain persons.
Osborn Has Power.
Senate File 65, the taxation bill
which the democrats and corporation
lobbyists fought so bitterly during
the last legislative session, gives Os
borne the power to demand reas
sessments of properties in counties
if he thinks it necessary and the re
ceipt of the transactions of the com
missioners will be one of the meth
ods used in ascertaining whether the
county boards are playing favorites.
The energy of the administration
since the legislative session in cut
ting loose from old precedents in an
endeavor to get at the real valuation
of big properties in order to ulti
mately lighten the burden to -the
small property owner is making old
time politicians in Nebraska's old
time state house rub their eyes.
First. Osborne wrote letters to
county clerks advising the publica
tion of tax rolls. A surprising num
ber of clerks have followed his ad
vice, and, as a result, the rich man
who is paying less taxes than the
relatively poor man is suffering no
end of embarrassment in his home
town. From reports received at the
state house some of the revelations
in the publication of tax rolls in
some of Nebraska's counties will, un
less remedied by rich tax dodgers
next vear, result in court action and
unprecedented political upheavals
which will cause the politicians re
sponsible for the conditions revealed
in publication of tax rolls to retire
to private life under fire.
Attacks Refineries.
Next, Osborne went out to the
western part of the state and investi
gated the big sugar refineries. At
the last legislative session it was
charged that some of these refineries
were dodging taxes. Osborne came
back to Lincoln with facts and
figures in his possession which, it is
claimed, will force these t refineries
to double and triple their assess
ments paid to the state.
On Saturday Osborne, backed by
Attorney General C. A. Davis, wrote
letters to county assessors ordering
a stop on the exemption of certain
educational institutions from "tK:
tion. These institutions for years,
Osborne stated, have refused to pa
taxes, takme advantage of VHaw
which, the colleges interpreted, ex
empted all educational institutions.
Alleged Auto Theft Ring
"Fixer' Gets 90 Days in Jail

North Sixteenth street, alleged to
be one of the ringleaders of a gang
of "fixers" who locate auto owners
desiring their cars stolen for in
surance, was scored .and given three
months in the county jail by Judge
Foster in Central police court
Detectives Murphy and Rich of
the auto theft bureau of the police
department stated that they had
names of four business men who
turned down Love's offers to either
have their cars stolen or have thein
abondoned after they were set on
fire so as to collect the insurance.
With one of its leaders in jail,
Lieut, Jack Pzsanowski of the bu
heau stated that they are out to ar
rest other members of the gang.
Ure Light Rate Ordinance
Doomed Before Commission
An ordinance to repeal the light
rate ordinance passed by the former
city commission was introduced at
the city council meeting of the whole
yesterday and recommended for pas
sage. It probably will be passed at the
city council meeting this morning.
Commissioner Zimman said a sub
stitute ordinance will be introduced
in about two weeks. The ordinance
to be repealed was largely formulat
ed bv W. G. Ure. former city com
missioner, and provided for a de- C
crease in rates to small consumers
and an increase to large business
houses.
Officers Try to Identify
Suspect as Motor Thief
"Tennessee" Shepherd, the second
suspect arrested in the probe of the
murder of "Wingie" Davis, Omaha
taxicab driver, somewhere along the
Lincoln highway last month, was
taken to Lincoln yesterday.
From Lincoln he went with County
Attorney C. E. Matson and State
Sheriff Gus Hyers to Rockport. Mo.,
where efforts will be made to net him
identified as a companion of "Shorty"
McLaughlin at the ferry there.
McLaughlin is now held by' fed
eral officers for alleged automobile
stealing and drug peddling.
