Favorable report was ordered by the senate postothce and post roads committee today on the Townsend bill to create a federal highway commission and to establish an interstate system of public roads. Three democratic members of the committee will file a minority report. probably recommending that no change be made in the federal road law. The bill now provides for a fed eral highway commission j of three, The members would be appointed by the president and would be paid ?10rUUU a year. 1 he annual appro priation of $100,000,000 to aid states in building roads would be continued with the specificatoin that the sums allotted to the states must be ex Dended on interestate roads. The provision granting the com mission final authority in the selec tion of interstate road routes was retained despite democratic, opposi tion. The democrats, however, gained insertion of a clause directing the federal commission to act in co operation" with the states. States taking advantage of the fed eral aid provided in the bill are re quired to match federal tunds except in states having to exceed 5 per cent of the total area in unappropriated public lands, in which case the pro portion of state funds would be de creased in proportion of such public lands. Bright Automobile Lights Cause Serious Accident Red Cloud, Neb., June 13. (Spe cial Telegram.) Bright auto lights caused another serious accident when A. C. Slaby of this city was seriously injured in a collision be tween the buggy he was driving and an auto driven by a local farmer. Another auto was approaching and its lights, shining in the face of the farmer, made it impossible for him to see Mr, Slaby. The latter had a number of empty milk bottles in his buggy and the broken glass from these lacerated his back. The extent of his injuries is not known, as it is feared that in ternal complications may have re sulted. The driver behind the bright "lights, although presumably aware of the accident, did not stop and his identity has not been learned. Insane Man Who Killed Son Not Expected to Live Des Moines, June 13. (Special Telegram.) R. M. West, 1821 East Grand avenue, who shot and killed his son, Myron, Saturday morning, in a fit of insanity, canot live more than a few days, in the opinion of doctors caring for him. West has not taken food since he was subdued a short time after the shooting Saturday morning at his home. He has lain, naked, in the! padded cell at police headquarters, in a stupor. He has even refused water. He is broken physically and mentally, mumbling unintelligibly when questioned. Bury Former Mayor Red Cloud, Neb., June 13. (Spe cial Telegram.) David Davidson, 6101 Military avenue, Benson, clerk at Giles Broth- ers grocery store in Benson, believes he has identified the body of the mart taken out of the Missouri river Sun day afternoon near Camp Gifford a his brother, John, whom he said ha last saw in Benson Thursday even ing. Friday night a coat was found on the river bank north of Florence by Philip Bleik, 4010 North Twenty fifth street, and in an inside pocket was an accident policy payable to David Davidson, Benson. The coat was turned over to the coroner Mon day morning. The laundry mark "J. D." was found on the shirt and underlothing of the body. Neighbors in the vicinity of 1152 North Sixteenth street say they last saw Davidson Wednesday evening. He was said to be of a cheerful dis position and his brother, David, said he knew of no reason why his brother would commit suicide. David is of the opinion that his brother took off his coat to fish and acci dently fell into the river. Armed Citizens on Guard for Prowler Armed citizens and detectives were on guard in the neighborhood of Thirty-second avenue and Deer Park boulevard Sunday night, watching for the appearance of a prowler that has terrorized homes in that section during the last week. Old Time Resident Of South Side Dies Feter Hinkle. 78. a resident of the South Side for the past 25 years, died Sunday at his home, 2708 L street.
