r 6 B THE BEE: OMAHA. SUNDAY, JUNE 12. 1921. For the Child To Drink By LORETTO C. LYNCH. A mother writes to say it is all very well for dieticians to tell moth ers that their children must never have a drop of tea or coffee, but that children get tired of cocoa. For a change, give them Cambric tea. Half a cupful of milk is mixed with half a cupful of boiling water. A little sugar is added and the joungster sips his tea along with the grown folks, who are perhaps in dulging in orange pekoe. The cereal coffee on the market rind there are several varieties are good for children and most accepta ble to the palate if properly made. Read the directions carefully and tiien proceed to fol'w them accu rately. Sometimes a child will take hot malted milk when it is'fla'ored with cereal coffee when it may refuse -it if unflavored. Malted milk may be mixed with either hot water or scald ed milk. It is good cold as well as hot. Cold malted milk is often ac cepted by a child if a generous spoon ful of flavored ice cream is veil mixed into it. Hot lemonade for the last meal at 1 evening may be very properly given It is so much better than tea or cof fee. Squeeze half a lemon into a strainer set over a saucepan. Add one level tablespoonful of sugar and one-half a measuring cupful of water. Boil for one minute. Pour into a iug. Add a little cold water to cool for drinking. Grape juice, either hot or cold, is suitable for children. A little grape juice added to a lemonade gives it a different turn. Orangeade, also is good for chil dren. Of course, children should learn to drink several glasses of water a day. Make the water hot if you must, but give the child water. If you live where fresh pineapples are fairly cheap, you can enjoy a drink that will promote good diges tion. Prepare a pineapple and crush the fruit into a bowl. Sprinkle lightly with sugar and let stand. Col lect the juice and dilute it with hot or cold water. The drink may b: made from canned pineapple, but it is not so valuable to digestion a3 when made from the fresh fruit. But blue is the luckiest color that's worn. In Egypt yellow represents that death is the end of all human hope, because this is the color of the leaves when thev fall. In Ethiopia, brown signifies the earth to which all return. On the Nile black was lucky in sacrifice. A black bull, black sheep, or black chicken were, used to ap pease the gods. Blue is heavenly, truth, love, con stancy, fidelity. In the United States flag blue is love, faith and steadfastness. Green is jealousy, but also im mortal hope, especially of the eternal life and victory. It is the color of the laurel and the palm. Yellow is the symbol of the sun, God's goodness, marriage, faithful ness: On the malevolent side it de notes deceit, inconstancy and malice. The mourning color in America and most of Europe is black, but in Turkey it is violet, and in China, white. Purple is the color of royalty, loyalty, and things true in celestial origin. V, Violet is love and truth, but also passion and suffering. Red indicates love and courage. In the United States flag, it means royalty, fire. Gray is the shade of penance and sin. On the malevolent side red indi cates the love of evil, hatred, and other malignant passions. clack is death, mourning, des pair, earthliness; wickedness, nega tion, darkness. Indians think blue is a luckv col or. Some tribes, however, prefer white for their lucky color. lhe Scotch think srreen is a fatal color and should never be worn. The Irish, on the contrary, have taken it for their national clor, and think it lucky. , The Sioux Indians use green as a funeral color, and so green is never seen upon the living, as that would be unlucky. The Moki Indians have sarrt-A colors for their, prayers, yellow for pumpkins, green for corn, and red for peaches. Black and white bands are typical of rain; red and blue of iigntning. Violet is a significant color. The Madonna wore it affpr thu rnn. fixion, and the Savior after the resurrection. In these cases it is symbolic of passion and suffering, iuvc ana irutn. White is the token of litV lio4,t religious miritv. innocenrr. ith J joy. In the United States flag it means integrity of purpose; in the judge, justice; in women, chastity; in the sick, humility; in grief, peace. Both green and red were deemed fortunate colors by the Cakchiquel Indians; the former as that of the flourishing plant, the latter as that of the ripe and golden ears of maize. Red is the Iucy color in China. Red and yellow, catch a fellow. Blue and pink, he'll catch you. Pink and blue. -he'll be true. Black and white, hold him tight. When a Sioux Indian, courts a girl, he paints his eyes blue and yel low, and she paints hers red, as these are the lucky colors of love. A Los Angeles Indian girl paints her cheeks red when she is in love, so as to win the man she fancies. In Shetland red is called the color of lightning and also, the color of love. Hence the red winged lady bird and red legged stork are sacred to the goddess of love; the former being called the heavenly messengei of love, the fatter being believed to bring the babies. - Green is an ominous color for state. The Fort Crook interurban car leaves Twenty-fourth and N streets, South Omaha, at 12 o'clock noon. Guests will leave Bellevue at 2:30 going back to the Albright ceme tery for special memorial services at 3 p. m., in honor of Mrs. Elvira Tewksbury. Laundry Hints. While cotton or linen clothes may be soaked to' advantage all day or over night. It is a mistake to think that woolens cannot be soaked at all Soak them in a weak solution of ammonia in barely warm water for half an hour. This will not in jure the woolen and will make it easier to wash. All clothes should be turned in side out in washing. A good idea is to wash the outside first, then turn the clothes, wash on the inside, and leave turned this way for drying. If you use a washing machine, a good plan is to soap the clothes right side out and then turn them as thty arc put into the washing maihine. All soap chips or soap powders should be thoroughly dissolved in boiling water before being used in the laundry. ' Sometimes washing preparations that are harmless ii used in this way cat the clothes if allowed to rest in undissolved bits on the material. - Despite the fact that she is now nearly 80 years of age, Sarah Bern hardt, the sterling French actress, is now appearing in the role of a voung man, DORIS V lovers to be married in. The old doggrcl runs: Those dressed in blue have lovers true; ' In green and , white for saken quite. At the same time Shakespeare and the older poets praise a green eye in the lover as a sign of ardent love and constancy. There is a belief that green or yel low looking eyes belong to a jeal ous disposition. - Shakespeare alludes in "The Merchant of Venice" to green-eyed jealousy. Following is an explanation of the colors, as used in the various incantations of the American Indi ans: . ' East Red; success, triumph. North Blue; defeat, trouble. West Black; death. South White; peace, happiness. Above Brown; unascertained, but propitious. . '." Blue Sadness; melancholy, lone liness and chill. Yellow about the same as blue. Colors for the Months. January, crimson. February, heliotrope. March, dark blue. April, gray. May, pink. June, whit. ' July, light blue. August, yellow. September, lavendar. October, light brown. November, dark brown. , December, green.-; Common Sense vs. Laundry Problems The fact of a weekly laundering in this part of the world and this day, least, is as persistent as the fact of a tri-daily dish washing. It just has to be done. There is no way out of it. The only thing we can do is to simplify the laundry workr smce we cannot omit it. Of course, we can send our clothes to a public laundry, just as we can eat our meals at a restaurant. But both these alternatives cost a good deal cost, indeed; far too much to be a feasible thing to most of us. No, the best .we can' do is to simplify our laundry work and-do it as sen sibly and easily as possible. To begin with, it is possible to wear clothes that need little ironing. And jn summer ironing is a big. problem. It is hot work at best, and moreover there is necessarily more ironing "ecessary in summer than in winter. So we can wear cotton crepe underwear. We can pull and pat the sheets into shape and not iron them they are just as clean and sweet when folded unironed as when ironed for minutes and min utes. We can let stockings- go un ironed, and we can pull bath towels into shape without ironing them. Moreover, if we want to we can take advantage of those new table mats made of a good quality of oil cloth, stenciled with a pretty pat tern in color. These may be kept immaculate simply by rubbing them off with a damp cloth, soapy if necessary.. In these ways we can save our selves and our laundresses much work. And then we can make 6ur laundries or wherever vwe do Our washing and ironing, pleasant places to work in. Keep them clean, have as much air as possible. On wash ing . and ironing day have a cool, nourishing, easily digested luncheon. Have plenty of cool, but not iced water water in a bottle laid next to the ice is best. If possible, take some of the ironing to a porch. If you ' have an electric iron and an electric fixture on the porch the problem is solved. ADVERTISEMENT.
