Saunders Ball Team Wins Public
School Girls' League Championship
Champs Score 36 Tallies in
Seven Stanzas Mason,
Girls Blame Defeat on
Naughty Rain.
'Twas a bitter battle, but Saunders
School won, in scores if not in spirit.
For after seven gruelling innings
the Mason base ball team, com
posed of girls! was still convinced
it might have won had it not rained.
The score was 36 to 14, with the
Saunders team, also composed of
girls, in the lead.
The opposing batteries were
Dorothy Manger, pitcher, and
Eleanor Clapper, catcher, for Saund
ers; Mildred Toozer, pitchtr, and
Jennie Morocco, catcher, for Maspn
school.
Tie at End of First.
The game opened with Saunders
at bat. A tense silence prevailed
among the rooters on the sidelines.
Pitcher Toozer tossed a wicked
curve, and Saunders was able to
score but one run. Mason tied the
score the same inning.
The third inning was fatal for
Mason. Ruth Peterson, the Babe
Ruth of the Saunders team, came to
bat, and knocked out a two-bagger.
After that the scorekceper began
to earn her money. Before the in
ning closed Saunders v had made five
runs. To add to the disaster for
the Masonites their pitcher, Mildred
Toozer, sprained her wrist sliding
home, and was out of the game sev
eral minutes.
Ah, yes, the Mason girls staged a
sixth-inning rally. Ruth Hutton,
their own Babe Ruth, knocked out
a two-baggcr. Thus encouraged her
teammates began pounding the ball.
Five runs were chalked up, then it
began to rain and Fitcher Manger
gained control of the situation.
Wet Ball Ends Rally.
Spit balls were not allowed, but'
what can one do when the rain
wets the ball Anyway the Mason
batters were confused and failed to
score again.
As the last Mason girl struck out
the large convincing rain drops be
gan to fall more rapidly, and spec
tators began to flee for shelter. Su
perintendent of Schools Beveridge
and Assistant Superintendent Ryan
were among those who fled.
The game was continued 10 min
utes more but the Mason rally was
broken. - Thus did Saunders win the
Omaha Public School Girls' league
championship. And after all it was
a good game, even though there
were occasional shouts of "kill" the
umpire," or something to that effect.
Ruth Hutton and Grace Gallagher
were ball and base umpires, re
spectively. Both escaped unscathed.
The game was played yesterday
afternoon at Thirty-ninth and Burt
streets.

"Babe' Ruth Jailed; -Gets
Out in Time to
Play in Ball Game
New York, June 8. It takes more
than a jail sentence to keep Babe
Ruth from playing ball.
Babe served six hours a technical
day in the traffic court "pen" to
day, made a wild dash out to the
Polo grounds and played three in
nings of a winning game against
Cleveland.
After paying his $100 for speeding
about a week ago, he began serving
one day "in confinement" because
this was his second offense.
As 4 o'clock, the time for his re
lease approached, the same torpedo
roadster that twice led to his arrest,
awaited him. He sped away from
a cheering crowd with a policeman
on the running board to clear the
way and Magistrate McGeehan
seated beside him to see that re
would not be "pinched" again.
He arrived in time to swing a bat
,in the sixth inning. The crowds in
the stands did not recognize him at
first. There was a pause, then the
crowds rose to their feet and
cheered.
Chester Williams is the proudest
colored boy in the city, for he has
the distinction of being the only man
who observed a sentence in the same
pen with the hitting champion.
Chester said Ruth kept to himself,
held a gloomy face "a mile long,"
and refused even to join in a dice
game.
