That Alleged Greed Being
Fought May Break Up
Co-Operative Societies.
Lincoln, June 6. (Specials
Profiteering has resulted in the for
mation of -485 co-operative societies
in Nebraska, organized to balk the
profit grabbers, according to a de
tailed report today by Leo J. Stuhr,
secretary of the department of agri
culture. Detailed statements of the methods
and de scrintion of businesses entered
into were obtained" through a series
of questionnaires sent out by Stuhr.
Fully 50 per cent ot me manage
and secretaries of the co-operative
iircanizations who answered the ques
tionnaires declared that the same al
leged greed of the merchants and
other dealers in necessities which
forced th? farmers into the co-operative
organizations threatened to
break tip these organizations. Here's
what Stuhr says about it: ...
Defeat Own Purpose.
"It is evident that too many peo
ple organize in order to secure bet
ter marketing facilities or better
prices for themselves, and when these
facilities or prices were offered by
the competitor, the stockholder for
got the real purpose of organization,
forgot that the co-operative concern
was his store or elevator and sold
or bought where he could get the
most for his goods or buy the most
for his money regardless of the fact
that by so doing he was defeating the
purpose of his own organization, and
by his lack of patronage, discourag
ing others." ' '
