CHAPTER XVI.
Mr. Frog Is Amused.
With the clatter of the mowing

to ask his wife to what place she

though he had intended to sing an
other song for Mr. Frog, he did
not do it. Instead he said a hasty
good-day and hurried home to his
wife.
"My dear," Bobby said to Mrs.
Bobolink in an anxious voice, "do
you see anything queer about my
appearance?"
She looked him over carefully.
"Why, no!" she answered at last.
"Why do you ask me such an odd
question?"
"Well," said Bobby, "Mr. Frog,
the tailor, is always staring at me
in the oddest fashion and snickering
as if he saw something that amused
hin."
"Don't worry about that simple
ton 1" Mrs. Bobolink cried. - ."You
look a great deal better than he
docs. And as for your voices,
there's really no comparison. Yours
is one of the finest in Pleasant Val
ley; but Ferdinand Frog's is noth
ing but a croak. It's even worse
than old Mr.: Crow's 1"
After that Bobby Bobolink felt
better. He knew that his wife was
particular. And if she said he
looked all right then he was sure
he could have no cause to be un
easy. "It must be only Mr. Frog's queer
eyes,"' he said to Mrs. Bobolink.
"I've been thinking that he saw
something strange about me. But
I must be mistaken."
Nevertheless, the very , next time
Bobby met Mr. Frog the tailor
burst out laughing, right in hisjace.
And . again his eyes rolled from
Bobby's head to his feet, and back
again, in a most unpleasant leer.
"What on earth do you see to
laugh .at?" Bobby Bobolink de
manded. "Tee-heel" Mr. Frog giggled
"Don't you know?"
"No, I don't!" Bobby snapped. .
"It's your clothes 1" Mr. Frog told
him. "You've got them on upside
down!"

Romance in Origin
Of Superstitions
Brides Lifted Over the Threshold.
In a much-talked-about, recent
novel the doctor of Gopher Prairie
says to his bride, "There! I meant
to have you lifted over the thres
hold." Which shows tt the old
custom of lifting brides over the
threshold when they first enter their
new home still lingers among us, as
it is, also, a feature of rural wed
dings in England and Scotland. Ths
mixing up in the minds of our re
mote ancestors of spiritual and ma
terial things caused the threshold to
be regarded in a pecularly mystic
manner.
As its name implies it prevented
the grain, the body of the, corn-spirit
from sliding out when the chaff
flew away at threshing time. It
was that part of the entrance to the
house over which all must pass that
entered it. Consequently there was
a constant struggle to facilitate the
entrance of good influences and ki;p
out the spirits of evil by "doctor
ing" the threshold. v Cauls were
buried under their neighbor's thres
holds, personal relics calculated tc
facilitate the entrance of malign in
fluences. A large nail was driven

On Walpurgis night the German
peasant still lays flowers and
brunches upon his threshold to ke:p
out the witches; and chips from a
threshold used to be thought a val
uable ingredient in making smoke
for the fumigation of cattle. So as
no one knows what witches or evil
spirits may have done to the thres
holds, it is better that a bride, at the
critical moment of her entrance
her new home, should be lifted over
it to avoid contagion from the malign
influences from touching the possibly-infected
door-sill.

I Parents' Problems
What should be done in the case
of a girl who plays the piano nicely,
yet never wishes to play when
asked?
This girl may be shy; in which
case she should be treated gently
many of us remember what the or
deal of "playing a piece" before even
the small "public" of the parlor was,
in childhood. She should be told
that shyness is a form of self-consciousness,
which she should strive
to overcome, never letting it stand in
the way of courtesy which playing
the piano when asked, is.
Where It Started
The Pronunciation of "Arkansas."
The word "Arkansas" comes from
an Indian word, "Kansas," meaning
"smoky water," and the French pre
fix "arc," meaning a bow. The first
part being French, the French pro
nunciation was applied to the word,
resulting in the pronunciation "Ar
kansaw," But so much discussion
and misunderstanding grew up, that
in 1880 the state legislature passed
a law making "Arkansaw" the cor
rect pronunciation. This is prob
ably the only case on record of the
pronunciation of a word being fixed
by statute.
