Drawn for The Bee by McManus Copvrteht, 1021 Internnttnnsl News Service Ex-Employe Gets Compensation Pay Money Must Be Paid hy Com pany Although Man Now Works Elsewhere. A decision of much importance under the workiiignicn's compensa tion law was handed down by Dis trict Judge Wakclcy yesterday in the suit of E. W. Poast against the Omaha Merchants Express com pany. Poast, an employe of the company for 21 years, suffered a broken leg at his work, January 31. 1919. Twenty one week later he went to work for the Illinois Central railroad. The de fendant company thereupon ceased to pay him the weekly compensation of $12 which had been decreed for 43 weeks because of a 35 per cent per manfnt disability to the injured leg, a total of $535. Tudtrc Wakelcy decided that the $12 a week must be paid while Poast was incapacitated from work and the 43)4 weeks at $12 a week must be paid in addition. "This is the first judicial interpre tation of this question," said Anson II. Bigelow, attorney for Poast. "It will effect numerous other cases now pending and will open up others." If the 2. 000,000,000 feet of timber annually destroyed in the United States by forest tires could be conserved, ma terial enough would be saved to build a five-room frame house every 1(H) feet on both sides of the road from New York to Chicago. This estimate was mado by the director of the forest service of the Department of Agriculture, who said further that in this long line of structures there would be more than 100,000 buildings, which, with four dcodIc to a house, would provide homes for nearly one-fourth of the animal increase in population, k number sufficient "to populate a new city each year the sire of Cincinnati, Minneapolis, New Orleans. Kansas City or Seattle. 'More than 100,000 forest lires have occurred in the United States during the past five years," said the forester, 80 jer cent of which were due to human agencies and therefore preventable.
