10 THE BEE: OMAHA, SATURDAY, MAY 28. 1921. - Efforts to Save Naval Oil Supply Checked BvFall Secretary of Interior Requests Drilling of Wells Along Bor der of California Reserve Be Postponed. Wahington, May 27. Efforts of the Navy department to prevent de pletion of a navy oij reserve by oil companies operating along its boun dary have been halted by Secretary of the Interior Fall, pending disposi tion of a private oil claim within the reserve. About a year ago ; the Standard Oil company began drilling wells on its property adjoining naval oil reserves in southern California. Some of the wells are within 250 feet of the boundary line of the reserve. The Standard has been obtaining a continuously increasing volume of oil from these welts, the present out put being 46,000 barrels a day. and the Ntvy department believes that a large part of this oil comes from the adjacent naval reserve. With an assured oil supply vital to the navy, Secretary Dcnby deter mined to prevent further depiction of the reserve. On April 16 he adver tised for bids for drilling of offset wells just within the reserve, oppo site the line of Standard wells be yond the boundary. By this means it was planned to draw off the oil in this portion of the reserve, which it is believed is now going to the Standard. Bids were received' by the depart ment, but never have been opened, Secretary Fall having1 requested a postponement of action pending his disposition of the claim of the United Midway Oil company to rights in the portion of the naval reserve af fected. , ai : Girl-Wife Convicted In Juvenile Court of Slaying Step-Child Farmington, Mo., Jtfay 27. VS ff By HAZEL PEDLAR FAULKNER (VnlTer-.nl Service Staff Correspondent.) San Francisco, May 27. Juanita Miller's lily love has turned out to be a caveman. In place of the spiritual soul mate of her dreams, the daughter of the poet of the Sierras finds her bride groom of the tulip bed a man with a "buried past." His failure to disclose that past whether it be good or ill is one of the grievances which has combined with others to make the heroine of the April moon marriage turn in quiringly toward the legal path to ward freedom. For from "The Hights" today came word of the marital difficulties of the couple whose wedding a month ago was heralded with the music of timbrals and celebrated with the feast of roasted kid and home brew. Used Rough Tactics. And as evidence of the charges of caveman which Juanita makes against her husband, she showed a bandaged arm and bared a bruised breast, mute but colorful testimony of the "physical cruelty," which she says will be one ground for the con templated divorce. But the physical bruise is only part of the hurt which Juanita says Willed is hcr's, as the result of the disil lusionment wrought by her tiger lily husband. ' For Juan of the golden locks and the buried past has failed tp make good on the domestic part of the bargain. False to his prc-nuptial promises he1 had not done his share of brushing up the floor or of mak ing the bread. "I still love him,, although he has turned out to be a caveman instead of my lily love," said Juanita today. "I am contemplating divorce on the grounds of cruelty and non-support, but I am not going to take definite action until a little later, after a stated number of days." And then the bride of a month dis closed one other rift in the nuptial lute. "Before wc were married Juan said he had no bills and was not :n debt, and now it turns out that he has unpaid bills," according ' to Juanita, and his wish to repay the debts led to their first financial dis pute. The breech between the two be came an open one over a mere the atrical contract, wherein Juanita was to receive the family pay at the rate of four to one. Juan objected, de manding at least an even break in the family bank account, because of those back debts. Mrs. Stillman Dictating Terms In Divorce Case Friends Making Every Effort To Have Husband to Agree To Settlement Without Fight. New York, May 27. Mrs. "Fifi" Stillman is dictating terms to James A. Stillman, and they are "pretty rough," according to a friend of the banker, in discussing reports that divorce negotiations were practically ended. "Jim Stillman. in his mental pro cesses, is a lot like his father," said the friend. "Pie is stubborn as a mule. His friends are working with him night and day to persuade him to agree to the terms dictated by his wife and smother the scandal. Characteristically, he balks at sign ing an agreement in the preparation of which he has had no part and every line of which is obnoxious. "However, the case will never come to trial. Mr. Stillman cannot fight. All the breaks have been and will be against him. If he cannot be won over in the five days remain ing before the resumption of pro ceedings in Poughkeepsie next week, his lawyers will ask for a postpone ment, which will temporarily take the case out of public notice." It is reported that the only issue now standing between the Slillmans is the refusal of Mrs. Stillman, to agree to go abroad and live there. Mr. Stilhnan's friends were spurred to new efforts in persuading him to agree to anything when they heard that Mrs. Stillman had been offered a large Sum to report future legal proceedings for a combination of sensational newspapers. Representatives of the wife are preparing, when the hearings are re sumed June 1, for rigid cross-examinations of Dr. Hugh Russell, the Buffalo osteopath, who testified that Mrs. Stillman had told him Fred K Beauvais was the father of Guy.
