Very Good Weather at Hoy

Jones Show Up Very Well
Galleries Getting Big. .
By CHARLES CHICK"JEVANS.
: Special Cable Dispatch. I .

Hoylake, . fnglnd, May 21. Ex
traordinarily beautiful weather con
tinues at Hoylake.
i The course is getting as hard as
rocks and the greens are terrifically
swift. It is fast becoming impossi
ble to pitch a shot and make it
hold.
It is very evident that a man who
can keep the straight just now has
it all over the long hitters. If the
condition keeps up we should be
ready for surprises.
Golfers are coming in great num
bers .to this knickerbockered city,
There is much activity about the
club' house and all indications of a
championship session are rapidly
appearing. Some of tft tees and
greens are roped off and one big
tent has already been erected, borne
of us . have even been given our
badges for the privileges of the club
house.
Only one of the American play
ers was out today. " Captain Fownes
suggested that it would be well for
us to rest up.
Tolley appeared at the course for
the first time today. I met him di
rectly after luncheon. I was bubbling
over with enthusiasm over Bobby
Jones' morning round of 71 with a' 33
for the last nine holes. It happened
that Tolley had just finished the last
nine in' a 33 also an interesting
coincidence that throws light on his
present game.
Hilton's playing today was very
good. By the way, it brought back
memories of Sandwich in 1914.. (N'o
one can play-at Hoylake now with
any of the older players without re
calling those who will never play
again. .
Range League Bars
Indicted Players
Hibbing, Minn., May 21. Indict
ed former players of the Chicago
White Sox will not be welcomed in
the Range league clubs, according to
information given out here yester
day. Oscar (Happy) Felsch, former
outfielder of the Chicago Americans,
is understood to have expressed a
desire to play with the local club, but
the management decided sentiment
was . too strong against the men
who are accused of disgracing the
national game.

JACK DEMPSEY.
, Universal , Service has asked me
three questions: . ' , ,'
'-'Who will win the Dempsey-Car-'
l;:V nenticr fight on'
July 2? . . :
How many
rounds do you
think it will last?
Why do you
think the man
you pick will
win?
I answer them
briefly at first:
Dempsey w i 1-1
win; the fight
will last . six
rounds; Dempsey
will win because
of his rugged
constitution; his
.terrific , hitting.
; his absolute fear
lessness and his speedy "footwork.
No . heavyweight : : chainpjonship
bout sine" the memorable" meeting
of Jim Corbett and John L. .Sullivan
has brought, ,'togcf her two- men so
diametrically -opposite .. as . the .com
ing bout between Jack , Dempsey,
champion,".-and Georges - arpentier,
challenger. ,..
As in the Corbett-Sullivan bout,
the champion is the rugged slugger;
the challenger the cleverly: defensive
boxer. But the difference :in . the
ages of the men and their physical
condition are not to be compared, as
the Sullivan who faced Corbett as
champion had passed his zenith,
while the Jjcmpsey who will defend
his title is .in the full flush of .man
hood. 1 : .
Like Sullivan, Dempsey is a noted
hitter and must win his battle by the
force of his one or two blows.
In Caroentier, Dempsey does not
face the same heady ringman as was
the Jim Corbett who took the title j
from Sullivan.
Dempsey will be as fit a man as
can be when lie answers the gong,
with six weeks of earnest, conscien
tious training under the watchful eye
of his pal and manager, Jack Kearns.
Carpenticr is not physically able to
withsiand the terrific onslaught oi
the champion. His clever footwork
will serve to keep him in the, safety
zone in the early rDunds,i.,but the
fearless attack of Dempsey will even
tually be rewarded, and there is no
doubt in, my mind? thkt -.Carpenticr
will fail to answer,-, the.- bell for, the
seventh, or ;at. the .most,, the eighth,
round. . - ' , ;
Early success in avoiding, Demp
sey's rushes -will embrazon the
French champion and be the means
that will bring about his defeat. One
opening-pne sock one thud as the
French champio'n hits the floor and
Dempsey will . still stand supreme
among . the heavyweights of the
world.
By HARRY WILLS.
Foremost negro heavy weight, -who slands
ready to take on the winner of the Di-mp-sey-('arpentler
fight. .
Jack Dempsey will win although
I am not prepared to give an opin
ion on the number of rounds the
battle will go. The result, in my
judgment, will depend to a large
degree on endurance and in that
respect I know Dempsey outshines
the European champion.
I know but little about Carpentier.
I have not seen him in very earnest
activity in the ring, but I do know
it will, take a very good man to
whip Jack Dempsey.
The heavyweight champion is a
powerful man and he is game right
through and if Carpentier can win
against him ,1 will be a most sur
prised person
One point I wish to make is that
the French champion has been
fighting longer than Dempsey and
consequently has used up consider
able of his reserve strength, even
if only to- train. That will ' tell
against his endurance surely, even
if he is able early in the fight to
dance away from the terrific blows
of the present champion.
I can't say anything against Car
pentier, but I have no hesitation in
picking Jack Dempsey to win on
July 2.

National track meet at Chicago on

In his races at Lincoln last week
the local lad showed good form in
covering the mile and half-mile dis
tances, lie started both races in the
lead of the field and at no time was'
he in "any great danger of-losing it
De Maranville has an ability'to sprint
in the last stretch of a race, and this,
coupled with his steady running,
marks him as one of the most prom
ising athletes in the state. '
At the meet De Maranville cov
ered the half-mile in 2:04 2-5 and the. .
mile in 4:42 3-5. While his time for .
both races was not anything 'spec--ta-ular,
it was better than was expected,-as
the condition of the track
and the elements of the weather hin
dered the runners considerably.
