THE UEE: OMAHA. WEDMESDAY. MAY 18, 1921. 1 i ltaly .Weathers After-War Peril Of Extremists t. . FascislT'Meet Violence With Violence in Fight on Social ists, Who Are Losing Power. Rome, May 17. It may be safely and confidently asserted that Italy haj weathered its storm, a storm far more dangerous than when it had to breast the blood-crested waves of war. Then the whole nation was united in a grim, passionate effort towards victory, but when victory came, shed ding a halo of glory on the surviv ors and on the 500,000 dead, Italy, by one of those inexplicable postwai f phenomena, instead of rejoicing, be Viame "a house divided against it- self." Since the war Italian character ap pears to have changed fundamental ly. Under Sigor Nitti the socialists and extremists had taken the upper hand to such an extent that soldiers or officers in uniform were curtly or dered off the trains by socialist rail waynien. There was, for some mys terious reason, such a reaction against the war that invalided soldiers, espe cially at Milan and Turin, formerly the stronghold of Italian patriotism, were brutally illtreated, had their stripes torn from their uniforms, and in many cases were murdered in cold hUir! "4 , Non-interference Policy. Signor Nitti did not interfere, as he believed that things would settle J .-.If f . .L. ..... Clown automatically ancr iiic war, s after an earthquake. This supine re missiveness to socialist and extreme ist brutality very nearly led to Italy's ruin, especially when the elections of November, 1919, returned 156 hot headed socialists to Parliament These, although they transformed the Chamber of Deputies into a - t of Bedlam, showed that they were utterly unprepared for constructive legislative work. The only bill they voted was one raising their salaries from 10,000 to 15,000 lire a year. All the rest was verbose obstructionism. Almost Desperate. When Giolitti, experienced old statesman, gathered up the reins of power, the situation was almost desperate, but he played a waiting came and succeeded in besting his adversaries. This would not have been possi ' ble without the improvised anti bolshevik reaction of the ex-fighters, the nationalists, patriots who had long been indignant spectators of so cialist and extremist violence. They organized "fasci," or groups so-called from the fasces of the ancient Ro man lictors who preceded the con suls and who represented law and order. The movement spread rap- idly from towns to hamlets. J The motto of the "fascisti" was f "an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth." Hitherto, and especially un der the Nitti government, the so cialists and extremists had had it all their own way, levying blackmail, mercilessly ooycomng iiun-sui-iaiisi to starve ' , " . Appear oh Scene.. , But the "fascisti" appeared on the scene in a very combatrve sptrit, fighting the communists in their lairs, burning red flags and por traits nf T rnin. tmathtnor furniture and heads, and freely exchanging re volver shots and hand grenades. The people who had been cowed by the brutality of the socialists now hail the "fascisti" as their rescuers, and the extremists are looking very small indeed. When the general elections take place this month it is very unlikely that the 156 socialist members who belonged to the last legislature will be returned to Parliament. At least one-third will succumb at the polls. J And with the new legislature Italy 4 will finally weather its postwar storm. "Hootch" Pedler Comes To Grief When Boys Get Drunk Kearney, Neb., May 17.
