THE BEE t OMAHA. WEDNESDAY, MAY 11. 1921. 'Wliilcwiisli" Charges Made in Bergdoll Case Representative Johnson (Jallg Court-Martial of Officers Following Escape of Draft Dodger Half -Hearted.' s Chicago Tribune-Omaha lire Leased W irt. Washington, May .10. Charges that the court-martial trial of army officers alleged to be responsible for the escape of Grover Cleveland Hergdoll. the draft slacker, was "a whitewash." were made by Repre sentative Johnson of Kentucky, a member of the house committee in vestigating the Bergdoll case. Representative Johnson expressed Jlllll3l.ll. Willi 1 a UH- , fl I the close of today's hearing, after listening for hours to the testimony of Col. John E. Hunt,' retired, com mander at Fort Jay, where Berg doll was confined. Colonel Hunt was one of the men court-martialed, lie was found not guilty and later retired from .the army be cause of ill-health. After reading portions of the transcripts of Colonel Hunt's trial, Representative Johnson declared: "I expect to show from this record that there , is enough to '.warrant more than a suspicion mat -there was a whitewash' in the court martial trial and that ' the counsel who conducted the trial was a party to the whitewash by the half hearted prosecution he made. I am ready now to take up the record and furnish additional proof of my statements." Johnson Irritated. The committee, at this juncture, adjourned until tomorrow to con sider whether it would publish the whole of the court-martial proceed ings as a part of its record. Rep resentative Johnson was irritated because other members of the com mittee indicated a lack of sympathy with the method of his cross-examination. Several times Chairman Peters reminded him that the wit ness was only very recently out of the hospital. In the portions of the transcript which Representative Johnson read. Colonel Cresson, who prosecuted the case, was quoted as stating that Colonel Hunt's responsibility was technical in its nature and that '"no one in the whole army was more sorry for Bergdoll's escape than Colonel Hunt." Repreientative Johnson contended that this should ze taken a proof of a "whitewash." Mrs. Ennna C. Bergdoll, mother of the escaped i lacker, will npt go on the stand tomorrow, but probably will appear Thursday or Friday. Judge Wcscott may be heard tomor row in reply to some of the state ments made by General Ansell. Hunt Reviews Circumstances. Colonel Hunt related all of the cir cumstances leading up to the grant ing of permission for Bergdoll to leave prison under guard to hunt for the mysterious $100,000 pot of gold in the western Maryland mountains, lie told the committee that he acted under i cJhority of the War depart ment when he permitted Bergdoll to leave prison. He had absolute con fidence in Clarence Gibboney and Gencrr.' Ansell, Bergdoll's lawyers, who p'u'anteed their client's return to prison. ' He detailed two sergeants, O'Hara and York, the most reliable men he could find, to guard and receive in structions to watch Bergdoll with the utmost care, according to Colonel Hunt. The colonel declared that the guard was adequate in every particu lar. "Do you think that the sergeant carried out your instructions to the letter when he permitted Bergdoll to go joyriding and attend the theater in Philadelphia?" asked General Shcrbourne, counsel for the commit tee, i "No, sir," answered Colonel Hunt. He added that O'Hara's conduct was beyond his understanding. He stated that O'Hara was "a total abstainer." Chairman Peters supplied the infor mation that Sergeant York "could not withstand the presence of a bottle of gin." Luxury Dangerous to High School Lads, Says McKelvie Lincoln, May 10. (Special. Snobbery, extravagance and physical and moral danger" is the lot of youths permitted to drfve "dad's" car to and from the high schools, Gov. S. R. McKelvie declared today in an ad dress before delegates to the state convention of the Knights and Ladies of Security, It is a shame, really, to think that any man or wgman will continue to suf fer pain, embarrassment and loss of teeth because of pyorrhea when a $1.00 bottle of PYROS, bought from any druggist, will clear it all up sweet and clean. There isn't the slightest doubt in the world about the effectiveness of PYROS. It has -done and is doing every day the almost unbelievable in restoring bleeding, receding, pus-oosing gums and pyorrhea loosened teeth to a normal, solid, healthy condition again. Ashford, Alabama. I have given PYROS a fair test and found it the most valuable remedy I haye ever used in the local treat ment of Pyorrhea. C. R. Watford, Dentist. Retailers Will Welcome Probe In Clothing Trade National Association Head Endorses Resolution in Congress Providing for Investigation. Retail clothiers will welcome any fair congressional investigation into the clothing industry, according to sentiment expressed at the conven tion of presidents and secretaries of 35 state retail clothiers' associations in Chicago last week. Louis Leppke of the Nebraska Clothing Co has returned from attending the meeting. Andreas Burkhardt, president of the national association,' Mr. I.e'ppke states, strongly endorsed the Moses resolution in congress for an investi gation of the clothing trade. "We need some authoritative an nouncement for the benefit of the buying public that will let in ligWt upon the actual situation," said Mr. Burkhardt. "Retail clothiers have been a target for vicious propagan da. They have stood as. a buffer between raw material and a clamor ins ' public. If raw material de clined, it was expected that the' same percentage of decline would be pass ed on to the consumer. People failed to grasp that intervening ele ments between the extremes raw material and the merchant absorbed much of the decline. Makers of cloth, brokers, makers of clothing and wholesalers absorbed a part of the cut. Add to these the fact that overhead expense has not appreci ably decteased in fact, has increas ed in many instances. Labor, trans portation, rents,, advertising, taxes, insurances" and many other expenses have shown no decline. "The recent report of the federal trade commission has failed to take into consideration certain vital ele ments. Other men in high places have prejudge the case against the retailers, without full information. The result is that the retailers will welcome any fair investigation,' so that the public may know the facts." Announcement was made of ef forts of the association to force re ductions in the prices of collars by manufacturers.
