If THE BEE: OMAHA, SATURDAY, MAY 7, mi. Why Are Young Men Not in Homes? By BEATRICE FAIRFAX Who is to blame for the fact that thousands of young men who earn fair Salaries live in halt bedrooms in stead of in, homes? Why do so many rirl have to flutter in erouos to the movies or sit at home bewailing their fate because Prince Charming seems to have no intention 01 nut' terint uo over the horizon? Don't men and women want to marry nowadays?. I've been Donderinsr this question ever since an evening not far gone by when I sat In a quiet nttie restaurant with a group of pretty girls whose Sunday evening diversion this manless meal had to be. At nearbv tables sat young men in crouDs of two or three or even alone, Now and then they glanced over at my girls with something l inter preted as longing. But there were the men and the girls divided after the fashion of a Quaker meeting house, i ve seen this happen over and over again. Why? Not the entire situation can be dis missed as one of the girls sought to do: "We don't know any men," said she. "Who gets a chance to meet men the sort of men she'd like? I mean? If I could meet the sort of men I like " Do vou take any time to dis cover whether or not you like the men you meet?" I ventured. "I know I don't." replied the girl with an air of finality. Perhaps if I'd gone about inquir ing of the lonely men, they'd have summed up the situation as coldly and with equal air ot finality. But no one can persuade me that in a normal world, run on normal, human lines, men prefer dining in restaurants of a Sunday night to get ting a "snack" in the kitchen at home. The high cost of living doesn't ex plain away human nature. Neither does the difficulty of meeting "the right sort of people." What does? Read a bit of Robert Lcuis Stev enson with me and sec if it helps us toward a solution: "They are taught to follow dif ferent vritues, to- hate different vices, to place their ideal, even for each other, y in different achievements. When a horse has run away and two flustered people in the gig have each possessed themselves of a rein, we know the end of that conveyance will be in the ditch." The great fault in our social scheme today is that we train our boys and girls so differently. We magnify the differences which exist naturally and in Nature's scheme until we've practically taught our young folks to speak different lan guages. We've made them so con scious of their dissimilarity that they can't look over the wall it builds and get a square view of each other. That makes modern social exist ence comparable to Stevenson's "gig in a ditch." Girls are shown a small field of experience and taught a very strict code ot judgment for all action. Their brothers are permitted to view a far broader cross-section of life and allowed a proportionately wider .code of morals. Girls are taught to believe that an action which condemns them to the outefLpale of society is permis sible almost desirable in a "real, red-blooded man." What is more natural than that two young people looking at each other across a gulf of over-self-conscious natural differences, with many addenda in the line of culti vated customs and morals, should fail to understand each other. That's what our lopsided social scheme ha9 done to us. But what do we ourselves do to direct our selves from the happy haven of home every man and woman's normal desire? Girls take far too much interest in a man's ability to spend, dance and show them a good time. A handsome, amusing good-for-nothing is likely to be far more of a "favorite with the ladies" than the plain, honest chap who's twice as good and unselfish and kind be cause he is not spending his life's energies on the little social things that charm but don't support. Since tinsel virtues appear to ap peal to women, what is more natural than that a fine man should con clude that girls don't like him and so turn from them to the other fel lows who are in like case? How many girls would be satis fied to dine with a man in the same quiet restaurant here they go vrith other girls? Or on the 75-cent "combination " dinner" they take when they're paying the check them selves? f v How many men, on the other hand, are willing to dig below re serve and shyness and quiet sim plicity to find companionship and charm? Don't most men try to meet the "pretty doll" who gives them noting but the thrill of hav ing the other boys say: "Some pippin you were out with last night, Charlie. Alt there with the looks. I'll' say so." Charlie didn't get one warm hu man thrill out of the evening with the pippin, nor one nice, human coiy bit of talk. But he spent on her the whole amount of his weekly pay envelope he can afford under the head of "pleasure," and so he has to eat with the boys while he's recuperating. The worst of it is that he'll take. his gaudy companion out again to impress other men. And all the while he's craving the sim plicity and sweetness and modesty that are sitting right at the next ta ble because the right men aren't anvwhere around. Whenever it occurs to men to seek in women the same fine com panionship they find in their men friends, things change. Whenever women meet men on the same hon est give and take basis they have for women,' loneliness and longing vanish and friendship comes in their place. Simplicity and honesty speak no language of sex but one of univer sal humanity. When men and women reach out for friendship in stead, of thrill or Jmpressiveness or cheap appeal, marriage will come trotting right in on the heels of the big honest liking which it younger sister to love. Benaol la aerer said la fciDu How to Keep Rugs Clean Rugs should be kept clean with a good carpet sweeper or electric vacuum cleaner, as the hard grits of sand will, if not removed, injure the nap. Do not sweep Wilton or Ax minster rugs hard at first as the tufts are liable td loosen before they are pressed down by usage. Always swffn with the nan. All Wilton and Axminster rugs are sheered when finished, consequent ly light fluff or loose wool will sweep out for some time. This is a feature of the fabric and not a de fect. Do not pull out any knots or tufts. Cut them off, even with the surface of the rtig9. The tufts in any domes tic tun can lie deliberately pulled out. This is due to the nature of the weave. Liarlit and delicately colored rugs arc liablaS'to become soiled and ap parently lose color. A thorough cleaning generally restores the orig inal colors. All high pile carpets may appear spotted due to the uneven crushing of the nap. With use the surface will gradually assume a more even tone. Protect your rugs from bright or strong sunlight, as all domestic rugs will fade some. Do not drag heavy furniture across your rugs as it is liable to pul out the tufts. Your rugs should be regularly scoured by a rug cleaner. Never pack away in storage unless they have been thoroughly cleaned. Turn your rugs around in the rooms occasionally so that the great er part of the traffic does not come in one or two places. When washing is necessary use mild soap with tepid, not hot water, else the alkali of stronger cleansers will eat into the surface and destroy the color. Never flood the surface with water. It is best to wash about a yard at a time, rinse with clear water and let dry thoroughly. Given a coat of varnish, linoleum survives a much longer period of wear. Before varnishing, make sure that the surface is free from grit or grease. Let varnish dry overnight be fore walking on the floor. . Waxed linoleum is easier to dean with a dust mop. Dust and grease will not stick to.it. Center Piece Hint To launder heavy embroidered round or oval centerpieces, wash aiM starch quite stiff. While wet divide into fourths or eights, place paper on rug and pin to floor, as you would stretch curtains on a stretcher. When dry remove pins and you will have a center done up beautifully, without any ironing.
