Jack. on 1016 Representatives Of Dairy Industry Discuss Problems Milk Producers From Every State in Union Lay Plans For Co-Opcralivc Mar keting System. Chicago, May 4. Two liundicd dairymen, representing every dairy district in the United States, attend ed t lie National Milk Marketing con ference called by the American Farm Liureau federation at the Congress hotel yesterday. Throughout the en tire day heads of different producers' co-operative milk concerns discussed the various district problems in an attempt to get at some basis for th working out of nation-wide market ing standards. The delegates will work along the line that has been followed at other recent farmers' marketing confer ences, inclding grain, live stock and fruit. It is probable that a national milk marketing committee will be unpointed todav to study the sys tems now in operation in the var ious sections of the country and wofki out a scheme that will aid all dairy men. Discussions yesterday centered around disposition of the surplus milk.' It vas pointed out that if any group of farmers around city could produce enough milk in times of flies and drougth that a surplus of milk would be produced in the winter and the only way to dispose of it was by making surplus into cheese, but ter, ice cream, and condensed prod ucts. . There is a strong tendency toward the development of a national co operative association. Since 1907, and particularly in 1916, the co-op erative plan has been growing among the dairymen; the largest develop ment and the most outstanding ex amples arc that of the Dairymen's league of Xew York and the Milk Producers Co-operative Marketing company of Chicago. The former organization with 55,000 members runs its business on a pooling basis. The producers throw their milk all into one pool and receive the same price, depending on the; grade of the product. Wants Fair Deal. The farmer is becoming more and more interested in what happens to the milk from the time it leaves his farm or this local station until it is set on the back porch of the city consumers. lie is interested in see ing that the consumers get a square deal, for he -has come to realize that he can.no longer disregard the fani- , ilics in the cities, who eventually use the milk, but that he must build up his business in order that he may sell his products according to their merits. Dakota Grain taw Is Invalid U. S. Judge Holds Provisions Of Grading Act Burden on Interstate Commerce. St. Paul, May 8. Grain grading laW of North Dakota passed by the 1919 lef 'slature was declared invalid in a decision handed down by Judge J. E, Garland, Washington, in the "United States circuit court of appeals here. It was held that the law conflicted with the federal grain grades and that it, imposed a burden on interstate commerce. "Any attempt," said Judge Car land's decision, "to regulate inter state commerce by North Dakota is in conflict with the United States grain standards act, wherein congress sought to establish a uniform system for the inspecting and grading of such grain moving in interstate com merce. Both acts ought not to be enforced. and cannot be without con fusion and embarrassment." Will Appeal Case. Fargo, N. D., May 4. W. C. Palmer, head of the North Dakota Grain Grading commission, said last night that the North Dakota grain grading laws cases would be carried to the United States supreme court. "We will continue to enforce th state law, pending the appeal to the United States court until we are en joined from doing so," he said. Knights of Columbus to Build New Headquarters New York, May 4.
