Ward home when things are not just
right:
In the dead of night last Sunday
Mrs. Ward was awakened by "Pep"
tugging at the comforters on the
bed. The pet uttered a few "meows"
and continued tugging at the quilts.
A moment later Mrs. Smith heard
the lock on the front door of the
house click twice. '
Fear of burglars flashed through
her mind.
And "Pep" kept on meowing.
Stealthily the mistress crept to the
top of the stairway, switched on a
downstairs light and bravely took
the stairs, "Pep" leading.
Investigation disclosed no trace of
burglars, but only that Mrs. Smith
had neglected to close the door
tightly when she retired for thq
night.
Reared From Kitten.
The door locked, "Pep" went to
his snug corner and dozed away,
confident he had done a duty as
guardian of the Ward household.
Mrs. Smith has had "Pep" for two
years, since he was a kitten.
When a stranger comes to the
door of the Ward home it is gen
erally "Pep" who tugs frantically
at Mrs. Ward's skirts before the
doorbell is rung.
