Wide Variety of
Extension Work
T

College of Agriculture Shows
Many Specialists Em-
nlovrd.
i j
The work which the college ot
agriculture is doing out in the state
to promore more profitable farming
is set forth in a recent annua! report
of the college's extension service.
During 1920, county agricultural
agents, county home agents, and
specialists sent out by the college
assisted farmers, farmers' wives and
families, and farmers' organizations
in 76 counties of the state. A large
amount of work was done to pro
mote better methods of marketing,
improved crops, better live stock,
modern farm homes, conveniences
for farm women, boys and girls
clubs, rural women's clubs, county
and community fairs, community
organizations and other interest
which make for more productive and
more profitable farming and more
satisfying rural life.
There are now 44 county agricul
tural agents, five county home
agents, and four county boys and
girls club agents. These agents rep
resent the permanent field force of
the college extension service. In
addition there are. a number of
specialists in agriculture and home
economics who go out from the col
lege to assist the county agents in
their problems.
The extension specialists last year
spent a total of 1.709 days out in
the counties assisting in this edu
cational work. Much of the work
was done in co-operation with coun
ty farm bureaus. It was not. however,
confined to organized counties, for
only 44 counties have farm bureaus.
in other counties assistance was
given farmers' union locals, boys
and girls clubs, rural women's
clubs, breeders' associations, the pub
lic schools, and various other organi
zations interested in the welfare of
agriculture.
High Yielding Grains Promoted.
The college is doing a great real
of work to promote the growing of
high yielding grains, such as kanred
w heat, Nebraska No. 6 and No. 60
wheat, rosen rye. Nebraska No. 21
Kherson oats and special strains of
alfalfa. For several years the college
has been distributing qualities of
improved grains among farmers, hop
ing to eventually materially increase
the total yields of the state. This
work. has been very successful in the
last few years and last fall more
than 60 carloads of wheat was seed
ed. In order to provide sources of
pure seed of these various improved
grains, the college established an in
spection and certification service
whereby farmers may know where
to buy and what they are buying.
The college's extension work in
the interest of improved live stock
last year consisted largely in its
campaign for the use of purebred
sires. Working in co-operation with
the United States department of ag
riculture, the college has encouraged
several hundred Nebraska farmers
fireplace their sires' with purebreds,
and the movement for better stock
is rapidly obtaining a firm foothold
in trie state. Sales pavilions have
been prompted and 20 counties have
cither erected them or are planning
to do so. County breeders' orgarri-
zations now total 32. t . .
Modern Homes in Demand.
The prosperity of Nebraska farm
ers in the last few years have result
ed in the construction of many mod
ern homes. The college has given
material assistance in this work, pro
viding a large number of blueprint
plans and holding demonstrations in
many counties to show the possibili
ties of remodeling old houses and
otherwise improving living cemdi
v tions. Forty-nine - water systems
and 21 sewage disposals srstem
were installed at demonstrations last
year. Twenty-rfour demonstrations
were given in the planning of farm
steads and buildings.v Sixty-three
drainage systems and a number of
irrigation systems have been planned
and installed through assistance
. given by the college's extension spec
ialists in agricultural engineering.
A large amount of work has been
done to demonstrate the control of
insect and rodent pests. With the
assistance of the United States de
partment of agriculture, surveys were
made of areas infested with pocket
ite steps taken to organize farmers
for the extermination of these pests.
Nearly 2.000 farmers in 23 counties
co-operated in this work. An infes
ation of San Jose scale among he
orchards of Howard county last year
was surveyed and controlled by the

year's maintenance work. The coun
ties in this district arc York. Polk,
Bu'-Vr, - Hamilton, Merrick, Colfax,

The plan as outlined by the engi

represented. ' - ' .. '

Charles Rav is the star at the
Rialto theater this week in "The Old
Swimmin' Hole,", a picturization of
James Whitcomb Riley's favorite
poem. Ray plays the role of Ezra, a
lovable carefree barefoot boy. Lovers
of Riley will be delighted with the
fidelity to detail in this latest Ray
picture.
Another Mother Play.
Vicente Blasco Ibanez is the
author of "The Greater Claim,,,
featuring Alice Lake at the Sun

predominating theme in the picture.
The story centers about a romance
between a son of a millionaire and
a chorus girl.

Norma Talmadge plays the first
Spanish role of her screen career in
"The Passion Flower," chief cinema
attraction at the Strand theater this

Farnum In Home Life.
Those who love fine dramatic
work will be pleased to know that
William Farnum is the featurede star
in "His Greatest Sacrifice" at the
Moon theater this week. This story,
based on modern life, shows that
there cannot be two masters in the
house. It shows that the wife can
not gain the greatest happiness in life
by sacrificing the love of her hus
band and her child for the plaudits
of the theater-g6ing public.
Picture of Briny Deep.
. Helene Chadwick and Russel
Simpson are co-starred in a sea
picture, "Godless Men," at the Em

where men meet their souls face to
face and sneer themselves on to acts
of horro; where they grapple life
with ruthless, destructive hands.

Chicago Builders
Stop Work To Force
Reduction in Wages
Chicago Tribune-Omaha Be Leaned Wire.
Chicago, May 1. May day sees
building in Chicago practically at a
standstill. When the noon whistles
blew Saturday the lockout announced
by the two associations of builders
who do 85 per cent of the work,
went into effect. Work was sus
pened on structures worth more than
$35,000,000 which are either in pro
cess of erection or for which con
tracts have been let. About. 10,000
building craftsmen joined the army
of the unemployed the activities
closed down by the lockout gave em
ployment to about 20 per cent of
the'48,000 or 50,000 men in the build
ing trades in Chicago.
Neither side in the wage contro
versy budged during the day, nor
were there signs of changed attitude.
The builders repeated that work
would not be resumed until a reduc
tion in wages to $1 an hour for
skilled men and 70 cents for un
skilled labor is accepted.
Youth of U. S. Dancing to
Hell, Declares K. ,C. Judge
Kansas City, May 1. The youth
of America is "dancing its way to
hell" through the public, dance halls
and movies, according to Judge E.
E. Porterfield of . Kansas City.
Severely arraigning the public
dance hall and moving picture house
as one of the greatest evils leading
to vice among children yet in their
teens. Judge Porterfield turned from
the usual "curtain lecture" of the
youthful delinquents who had been
arraigned before him in the juvenile
court, and scored the parents of
America who permit their children,
particularly girls, to attend the
movies or public dances unescorted.
"The courts nor the schools can
make good children out of bad, nor
keep children good so long as this
practice is continued."

100,000 extra votes will be given to every club member who turns in $25.00 in
subscriptions to the Omaha Bee before Saturday night, May 14th, at 10 p. m.
Each dollar over the $25.00 you send in will earn 4,000 additional votes. The
more you send in the more votes you get, and the closer you are to winning the
beautiful home in Minne Lusa.
Send in your subscriptions as fast as yo u get them. Don't wait until the end of
the week. Help the subscribers who helped you, by seeing that they get The Bee
just as soon as possible after they have g iven you their money. In turn they will
help you by telling their friends what good delivery service The Bee gives, and
what a good paper it is. A complete record of your remittances will be kept and
at the close of the extra offer period you will be sent a vote ballot showing the
additional votes credited to you.
ENTER TODAYTAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE EXTRA VOTE OFFER
But two weeks remain o the biggest and bsst extra vote offer. That means opportunity
for everyone who wants to win one of the 27 awards to be given by The Omaha Bee.
FUTURE SUBSCRIPTIONS
In some cases club members will find friends who will be glad to help, but are now paid in
advance for some other paper, and do not want two papers at one and the same time. In order
that the club members may secure these subscriptions, we have arranged to accept and issue vote
certificates to cover such subscriptions and will hold the subscriber's credit on our books and not
start the paper until the subscriber wishes. In sending in such subscriptions, be sure and mark
on the remittance sheet the date the paper is to be started to the subscriber.
WHERE TO WORK
We again emphasize the fact that a club member residing in one district is not restricted in
pny way as to the locality in which he may secure subscription payments and free vote coupons.
The object in dividing the territory into the eight districts was to assure each candidate that a
certain number of prizes would be awarded in their immediate vicinity.
Club members should not allow their supplies to run out before requesting more. If you
need more receipt books, remittance sheets, count slips or any other supplies, anticipate your wants
so that the H. Y. S. Department may send them to you at once.
NAMES BEING REMOVED
Many names arc being removed from the list daily. These are people who are not going to
take an active part. Their places are being taken by live, active workers, people who appreciate
that these awards are worth the effort of anyone. There still remain many localities that are
either not represented, or the club member is not active. If your community is represented
poorly, send in your name and make the effort.
The club member who enters today has eight weeks in which to work. The person entering
the Help Yourself Club today and winning the capital award, the $7,800.00 home, would be
recompensed for his efforts at the rate of ?085.00 per week. Figure it out for yourself on the
other awards.
STANDING OF CLUB MEMBERS
The standing of the club members as they appear in this issue include only the votes received
and counted at this office up to Thursday at 3:00 p. m. The standings will be changed again
in next Tuesday's paper, and will include the votes that are received and counted at the H. Y. S.
Club office before 3 :00 p. m. Saturday.
