Public Holds Most of Stock In Steel Firm List of Shareholder b in Larg est Company of Kind in U. S. Shows Artisans Own Majority of Capital. By HOLLAND. ' On the day which followed tha meeting of the stockholders of th United States Steel corporation a list of some of the stockholder! whose holdings are large was published. It was a short list and although it did reveal the fact that there were a few men of wealth among whose posses sions are large blocks of the tjnited States Steel company's stocks, it did, on the other hand, by inference at least, make it clear that the public, including the skilled artisans who are employed by this corporation, are the owners of much the greater part of the capital stock of this corpora tion. A year or two before his death, Abram S. Hewitt ventured the pre diction that within a generation's time almost all of the stock of this corporation will be in the bands of investors. Mr. Hewitt furthermore said it was no longer possible to assert that the capital stock of this corporation was to a great extent water. For if there was water in it in the beginning, that had been squeezed out and it was completely squeezed out at the time of the quo tation for this stock wa as low as $9 a share. Prediction Comes True. Mr. Hewitt, who was one of the ablest authorities in the United States upon the iron and steel indus try, predicted that within a few years this corporation would in iti output represent substantially one-half of the entire output of the American iron and steel industry. He told the. iron and steel manufacturers of Great Britain at the annual meeting of their association that the United States would in a few years take away thu prestige Great Britain had so long enjoyed as the leader in the iron and steel industry in the world. Mr. Hewitt lived long enough to know' that the prediction which he made and which his English hearers Were disposed to laugh at was justified. Th principal points made by Mr. Hewitt scon after the organlxation of the United States Steel corporation wis the ccrtaluty that the ownership of this property would be in possession of the public. Hn was con fident that In time the skilled artisan who worked for the corporation would be come a group conspicuous - among the stockholders. Ho thought that this would be a valuenbl object lesson for it would teach politician and damagoKus as v!t av the people that the capital of the United States which Is represented by th stock and bonds of Industries is really in the hands of the people. Who Are Capitalist. Recently it has become evident that th public is beginning to realize the fact that it is not a few men who are the possess ors of great wealth who are in the trua sense of the word the capitalist of ths United States, but it Is the common people. The reports made by the Penn sylvania, the Union Pacific, th Southern Railroad company and other railroad show that it is the public who ar tha owners of these properties, ti is trua that the public makes cholc of thos who re to direct these properties realiz ing that It is necessary that there be con. contested action and a high degre of ability If the properties are to b well managed. . , . Tho depositors In the sanvlng bank pt the United States, the policy holder la the insurance companies, th stockholders in the bank are indirectly at lat th owners of much the larger part of th stock and bonds which represent Ameri can industrial life. It Is however, only recently that the great public is begin ning to understand that demagogues ana running politicians seeking popular favor cannot attack our great Industries, ally ing that they represent enormous capital In the possession of a few men, without sooner or later endangering these indus tries and therefore doing harm to the great public which is really the owner of our industries and of th transporta tion systems. labor and Building. All sorts of expedient r suggested foe relieving the so-called building situation. But the fact is that the public whole Is now carrying on a tacit, unor ganized and voluntary strike, so to call it, because the publlo and the builder cannot afford to -pay the price which are exacted for building construction. It has been demonstrated that labor is the im mediate recipient of a large Prn',,r? of the amount which is spent In building operations and the wages which are in sisted upon by the union who members, bricklayers, carpenters, painters ana other, are o high as to caus. th chief obstacle in the resumption of building construction. . , Of course, some construction work or this kind is inevitable. There aPJPars to b less trouble in tue soum in i" of building activity than h) many part, of the north. It is not only high wages k. HniMinr unions demand wlilcn. Is causing the deadlock to be placed upon conatructlve building, but it is the efficiency. For instance, brlckUuer, who it Is understood are demanding the highest wage ever paid, nevertheless aro reducing the number of bricks to o laid by each workman in the course or the day' work.
