ling effect in political circles than a
peech delivered to tne women s sec
tion of St.' Jean Baptnte society by
the prime minister, of: the province,
A. L Taschereau, lid, when it
reached the ears of the English-
speaking population. Premier Tas
chereau made the alarming assertion
that the confederation is , In danger
of breaking up and that Canada is
at the parting of the ways and must
oppose either the status quo, seek
independence or annexation to the
United States.
, He made it. evident that independ
ence at least for French-Canadians
had attractions for him and equally
evident that rather than be annexed
to the United States he would retain
the British connection for a time.
The prime minister introduced his
startling review of the political out
look with an attack on nationaliza
tion of railways which, he declared,
-A --.,.- I" i t-ii i m har flip
burdens of the west iu order to save
the western provinces from bank
ruptcy. "Many people ask," he said,
"if this nationalization is not the first
breach and a strong breach of the
federal pact."
"At present," he said, "wc are a
'British colony, practically autona
mous. Men were divided in regard to
the future, and probably women
would be also.
"We are now, at the turning of the
ways, the status quo on rupture of
the federal pact, annexation to thy
United States or independence. I
ratiirallv prefer to sec Canada not
divided."
As to independence, the premier
said,, that at the time of confedera
tion, McDonald, McNab, Cauchon
and Tache had not hesitated to speak
of independence and Cauchon had
predicted that conclusion when we
had a poulation of 6.000,000 and a
trade of $250,000,000. "We have
passed that stage and I do not want
to be an apostle of independence but
evidently wc will not always be a
colony, and the day will come when
we will take our place in the family
of nations.
"I may be wrong, but it seems to
me that annexation to the. United
States would be fatal to our race. ,
"The Americans are the greatest
of assimilators. Few, races or na
tionalities which get into that big'
stream maintain their character and
their traits."

by others. You may do the same. TRY IT.
