THE BEE: OMAHA, MONDAY, APRIL 18. 1921. i New, Regulations On Cold Storage Food Made Public Rules Will Show Whether Articles Purchased Have Been Held Over 60 Days. The bureau of markets, state de partment of agriculture, made pub lic further rules and regulations gov erning food held in cold storage for human consumption. The new reg ulations will make it po'ssible for all consumers to know whether the food they are purchasing has been held in storage for a period of 60 days or more. Foods held in storage for a pe riod of 60 days or more must be sold ns cold storage foods and the pur chaser must be advised to that effect, the announcement states. The bureau further specifies the form in which the goods must be marked. "The letters or figures must be in plain, indelible type not less than three-eights of an inch in height." In marking the dates of entry and withdrawal, the word ."received" must be written "ree'd" and the word "delivered" "del'd" and fig ures separated by hyphens may be used to indicate dates and will be regarded as sufficient date if fol lowing the word "ree'd" or del'd." The last two figures -of the numbers indicating the year when such foods were placed in or removed from storage may be used. The announcement states that for merly the markings on cold storage articles were not always intelligible to the public. "The consumer will have no difficulty now in under standing when the article was plac ed in storage, the date of removal, etc., if they will observe the mark ings on the original container," e , announcement states. There are at present 33 cold stor age warehouses operating in Ne braska and licensed by the state. The warehouses are inspected quar terly. Each plant is required to file a monthly sworn statement giving complete information in regard to food products held in storage on the last day of the preceding month. To cuss, they say, is quite unnecessary, To use short, ugly words that start with "by," Discloses that a man's vocabulary Is sadly shy. In order that their casual conversations By those they speak to may be understood, Without the customary imprecations. .They're hunting 'round for something just as good. In Shakespeare's works, in Congreve, Greene and Bacon And other books by erudite old birds, These boosters of reform have undertaken To find new words. Well, as for us, we really hope they'll find them; We'd like to'put them on the proper track, And yet it seems our duty to remind them That cuss words reach a rather long way back. If we believe such widely lettered sages As Lecky, T. Carlyle and our Mark Twain, The gallants of the very earliest ages Were quite profane. In every Latin bard's vocabulary We find unpleasant words they used to speak. Demosthenes, we understand, was jerry To all the objurgations in the Greek. . ' . And though we hate to hear men speak profanely, And hold our ears whenever we're around, Good substitutes we think "they'll look for vainly They can't be found. FIFTY-FIFTY. Dr. Einstein couldn't . understand the American reporters. Which made it all even. TEMPTATION. It is a good thing for George Washington's reputation that he never had to keep a golf score. THE SAFEST WAY. If we were Mr. Carpentier we would submit that misunderstand ing with Mr. Dempsey to the grievance committee of the league of nations. , (Copyright, 1921, by The Bell Syndicate. Inc.) WHY Is a Druggist Called an "Apothe cary?" The radical difference- between the apothecary of old and the druggist or pharmacist of today is apparent at once from' the lines which occur in the fifth act of "Romeo and Ju liet," where Romeo remarks: "I do remember an apothecary, whom late I noted in tattered weeds, with over hanging brows, culling of simples; meager were his looks, sharp mis ery had worn him to the bones; about his shelves a beggarly ac count of empty boxes were thinly scattered to make a show." But, even in these days, the "culling of simples" was an integral part of the apothecaries' art, though the pre scription department has sunk al most into oblivion in the establish ment of the latter-day druggist, whose candy counter and soda foun tain bring in far more revenue than the section devoted to nfedicine. Taking into consideration .the vast assortment of, different goods which are to be found in practically every pharmacy today goods rang ing aH the way from fountainpens to hairnets it is interesting to note that the druggist really has authority for this heterogeneous collecion of goods in the very derivation of the word "apothecary," for this is from the Greek apotheka, which was prac tically the equivalent of our "store room" or "warehouse." Today's talismanic stone, the beryl, wis believed by the ancients to be potent in aiding those who were engaged in litigation. It was claimed that anyone who wore it would never be defeated in a law suit or suffer from injustice. The beryl was also believed to be a valuable talisman for soldiers, bring ing them both courage and success. Amber, which is today's natal stone, was thought in olden times to be the dwelling place of spirits, which worked for the good of the perron who wore the stone. More recently it has come to be looked upon as a lucky stone for those in terested in horse racing or in games of chance; it is also said to govern for b'ood lovc affairs of those born on this day. Today's color is dark blue, sym bolic of generosity; it is said to bring good fortune in the shape cf a gift of money to anyone wearing it today.
