Two hundred Nebraska live stock
feeders met at the state farm here
today to discuss the results of ex
periments in feeding cattle, hogs and
sheep carried on by the agricultural
college. Once more the records
show that the standard ration of corn
and alfalfa is most successful for
fattening cattle and, sheep at the least
cost. And once more the ditticulty
of getting a profit from the industry
was revealed. The main object of the
experiments was to determine the
relative value of various feeds.
Farmers who listened to the report
of Professor Savin, which showed
a loss on six lots of sheep ranging
from 30 cents a head to $1.36, who
said that he had been unusually suc
cessful and that most sheep men had
lost more. The sheep were bought
last November and kept on different
kinds of feed until March 1. Those
which had no silaere made the best
progress, the average gain a head
of the 30 fed on corn and ailalia
being 34.61 pounds, and those fed
on corn, alfalfa and silage, 28.90
pounds. They were bought at 12
cents a pound and the market
slumped so that they; were sold at
9.9 cents a pound. Five dollars
worth of feed was required to put
on 100 pounds of flesh.

ing, with the latter a slight favorite,
putting on 1.68 pounds a head a day
as contrasted with 1.41 pounds for
the lot on corn and tankage alone.
The hogs were bought in November
for $11.50 a hundred pounds and
sold in February for $8 a hundred.
The cost of adding 100 pounds
weight ranged from $5.17 to $9.30,
varying with the ration, and losses
'ranged' from $5.62 a head to $10.55.
in discussing beef, the general
opinion was that the best demand
is for well-finished light steers, with
fattened calves, known as baby
beeves, showing the most promise of
profit. Prof. H. L. Gramlich ex
hibited a scrut steer that put on 400
pounds of flesh in 150 days' feeding.
Last November it was bought at
$5.25 a hundred and is now worth
$7 a hundred. Whereas this sort
of animal would make a profit, bet
ter grade steers would not do so
well and the better class cattle fed
by the university showed a loss.
Supply Regulation Discussed.
The idea of regulating the supply
of live stock on the market by the
demand was uppermost in the meet
ing of the feeders. Many farmers
spoke of the wisdom of a change
of system by which feeder buying
would not be concentrated at one
particular season, thus preventing
the necessity for throwing most of
the fat stock on the market at the
same time. The ultimate object
sought by the live stock men is an
arrangement by which the packers
and other buyers would state how
manv cattle they could slaughter at
a market at a given time a,nd by
which the stock men would provide
so mueh and no more, thus endeavor
ing to hold ( the market steady, re
placing wide price fluctuations by
a narrow movement above and be
low a base line.

the opera and his appearance there
was associated with the presence
with him in the opera house of the
former ambassador from the United
States to the court of St. James,
Mr. Davis,, and also of one of Gov
ernor Herrick's predecessors as am
bassador from the United States to
France, Henry W. White.
Viviani Enthusiastic.

a whole they wer representative of all
that is best, in the intellectual, financial
and educational life of New York.
Revelation to Many.
Vivianl's address was a revelation to
manv of what the capacity of the real
orator is who is thoroughly dominated
by his subject and who Is a msster of
his native tongue as well as highly prac
ticed in the truo charm of rectorlc. For
although his addross was delivered 1n
French, nevertheless even those who do
not understand that language were cap
tivated by the exquisite charm of hla
voice and the perfect grac which char
terized his personality. Every one knew,
even though the address was not inter
preted into English, that he was speaking
for France and for the United States, be
ing persuaded . that the cordial relations
which have always characterised the two
countries ivlll be maintained and even
increased. He made it clear that he, rep
resenting France, looked upon the note to
Germany by Secretary of State Hughes as
a perfect guarantee for the future peace o?
the world.
Sustained Applause.
The spirit of this gathering is regarded
as well reflecting the sentiment end
opinion of the American people. That was
demonstrated by the sustained applau
with which a remark made by Frederick
R. Coudert was received. For Mr. Coudert
asserted that our allies now know that
although the United States is not a mem
ber of the league of nations nevertheless
we will Join them In insisting that Ger
many meet In full the reparation which;
is to be determined and that Germany
cannot rely upon any sentimental or other
assistance from the United States of a
ktnd which might tend to embarrass th
allies as they approach th determination
of the issues with Germany. Mr. Coudert
said that th American people ar ratify
ing the verdict of guilty against Germany
and will tolerate no treason whether that
