Sinclair Lewis in
New York
City
"Sinclair Lewis, author ot 'Alain
Street,' The Job' and other novels
of American life, made his local
debut as a lecturer in the town hall
yesterday afternoon," said the New
York World of March 30, 1921, con
tinuing: "He disclaimed the title,
however, saying that a lecturer was
one who 'wears a spiritual frock
coat,' whereas he himself 'talks to
people.' ' '
" 'The only reason people come to
hear an author lecture,' he said, 'is
because they wonder what kind of a
poor fish the man was who wrote the
book.'
"As a matter of fact, the author of
'Main Street is a somewhat different
'fish' from what one might judge
from the reading of his novels. He
is epigrammatic, ironical, rapid-fire.
He catches up his listeners in the
middle of a laugh with another joke.
He is young looking, very tall and
lean and wears his blond hair parted
in the middle.
"'New York is the least provincial
citv in the United States,' said the
author. 'I regard myself as quali
fied to speak of it because I lived
here for a time about 1906, when I
resided in the "gas house" district at
Fourteenth street and. Avenue B. I
was of the company of young writers
who came to New York to save it.
We didn'fe exactly know from what,
but we wanted to save it.'
. "'Main street, however, is my
country. I love it, and therefore
