Europe's Inability To Buy Halts U.S. Copper Industry Suspension of Mining Affects Entire Country But-Business Coming Back De clares Copper Magnate. ByN HOLLAND. Tf vrnn wrre now able to buy American copper the industry would be speedily restored. n iuw collapse is, however, only tempor ary. One of those whooare heavily interested in the copper industry and who returned yesterday to Jcw York from a visit to the copper country, spoke with the authority of first-hand information of the cop per situation and what it means not only to the railroads and to the employes, but also the country. But he ' qualified his remarks by saying "ih liuciiifCQ i all miiiincr back. Time alone is needed for the re storation of this industry." He was asked if the organization recently perfected in the hope that il woiild be able to aid in the financ ing of heavy sates of copper to Europe had begun its contemplated work. He said that some delay has followed the organization. It is probably due, however, to the fear that this copper financing associa tion would at the present time be unable to sell its debentures. It had been the hope that it would be possible to market in the aggregate $1,000,000,000 of the debentures. So also one reason for the delay In per fecting the Foreign Trade Financing cor poration is believed to ba the oppiehen- 4 sion that not for some month will tha debentures put out by this organization find a market. But the marltet is sure to be found sooner or later. Meanwhile, the depression in the copper Industry snd the difficulties asociated with the mar keting of our American products In Europe continue. The Southern Faclflo and Other Railroad. The suspension of the copper mining Industry which is represented by about three-fourths of the corporations engaged In that Industry Will bear heavily of xourae. upon the many thousands who work: in the copper mines, u ney win oe una me to buy commodities or at least tlir.ir pur chases will be curtailed. But the Southern Paclflo railroad and other railroads ara likely to be seriously affected by the suspension of the copper mining Industry., One of tho chief items in the traffio carried by the Southern Pacific has been copper so much of which Is mined In the Southern Pacific railroad district. In nor. mal times this railroad has transported in regularly sustained traflic, large amounts of copper from the copper country to the cast. It has for Instance carried many thousand pounds to the American Braf. company, which la the largest single cor poration in the world so far as the pur chase of copper Is cpneerned. But while the Southern Pacific has found profitable traffic In the transpor tation of copper from the mines to the markets, it has not been obliged to bring back empty cars to the copper district. Its return freight consisted of oil, sup plies of many kinds, machinery and other commodities which a-r. needed in the copper dtstrirts. Now with the suspension of this Indus try this heavy traffic Is for a time at least ended. Arizona is chiefly a copper producing state. It has furnished a large traffio to the Southern Paclfto and to some other railroads. Now for a time th'.a traffic Is gone. It Is a now com plication which the railroad companies of the United States or some of them are now compelled to face. In The Lake District What Is true of the Southern Pacific so far as copper transportation la concerned is also true of that great and wonder ful produrer of copper which is known as, the Lake district. Already discoveries have been made of new large copper veins in that district. It was the first of the great copper poducing properties of the United States. But il cannot now sell its copper excepting at & loss and not much of any of its copper to Europe which for merly was a large purchaser of the prod-, ucts of the Lake cooper district. Thee cor porations engaged in this Industry, there are from one point of lew not seriously embarrassed. For they can look with a comfotable feeling at the large cash sur plus which they have been accumulating partly for the purpose of meeting em ergencies of this kind. This surplus will provide them with the means for meet ing current expenses although these will be greatly reduced by the laying oZ of tba men employed in the mines. The World Must Have Copper. The world however muat have coppfr. Upon It to no small extent depends the restoration of Industries, of transporta tion and of communications by means of telegraph and telephone wires. But the copper men say that the worldls now In a snag, and that time will be renuired for the removal of this obstacle. This con dition is Illustrated by a report brought to New Tork by a business man of the. United States who hsd' recently returned from Austria, How can what is left o Austria as a nation, recover some part of Its former industry unless it Is able to secure American copper. But the con ditions of flnarice in Austria make it cer tain that not by any Internal resources can Austria secure the copper which she needs. To illustrate this, reference was made to a cortaln bank in Vienna. It owed the bank of England a large amount of money and the debt was payable in pounds sterling or Its equivalent In marks, but at the present rate of exchange ;f the payment waa made In marks as It would have to be If It were made at all. the amount would be In excess of the entire capital of that bank. So great la the difference in exchange. There may be a temporary suspension la the search which has been on the way fot some time the world over for new cope per producing properties. But that search will be renewed especially In South Amer lea as soon as normal conditions In thii industry which Is one of the five fundal mental Industries of the United State! are restored.
