A "Wicked Hoof" Process Produces European j Standards by American Methods Cost Within Keach of Average Income. , Charles V. Nash, head of the Nash interests of Kenosha, Wis., and origi nator of the "straight-line" produc tion system for motor cars which brought the ownership of automo biles within reach of the average American, has announced a radical new production method, applied to a different class of cars, which dupli cates by machinery and at a lower cost the fine handwork that has al ways distinguished the leading cars of Europe. 1 he immediate benetastor ot Mr. Nash's new production conception is the LaFayette Motors company of Indianapolis, of which he is presi dent. "After more than 20 yeaia in the motor car business," says Mr. Nash, "most of which has been devoted to the production of cars in the medium price class, 1 have realized in my as sociation with LaFayette an ambition which I have always had, namely, to produce a car comparable to the linrst hand-made cars of Europe, but designed for American road condi tions and long distances and manu factured on a practical machine basis which would make ownership possi ble among that substantial class of 'men and women in this country who iind true satistaction m tnc assured nnnlitv of ilieir nossessont. "Not until recently did circum stances give me the opportunity to work it out. Starting with the prem ise that handwork can be dupli cated by machine operations if you use enough of them, we proceeded to equip the LaFayette plant with every device whicli would add the slightest degree of reliability or per formance value to each part. There is no secret about it. It is simply a case of thoroughness, but it is a de gree of thoroughness which has never been tried before in this coun try and which might have been im possible without the precision meth ods recently developed by aircraft manufacture. "While this multiplicity of opera tions adds to manufacturing cost, it does not approach the cost of hand work, because of the increased speed with which machine woj-k is accom plished. Besides, it reduces to the lowest possible degree the 'human element," which is the greatest fac tor of error in any fabricated prod uct, and it retains that important as set of the American method, the per fect interchangeably of parts." Willys- 1 TrtVin 7 VVillva TiMfl of the Willvs- Overland, Inc., although 47 years old, put many younger men to shame yesterday when he danced to a very lively tune played by Dan Desdune's orchestra at a banquet in his honor at the Van Brunt Automobile Co. sales rooms. The dance was a combina tion of the Scottish flitiff, the Yid dish "Kazatskee," the shimmy, ana the hula-hula. Notyithstanding this was a very difficult dance, Willys "put it across" and w'as applauded not only by the assembled crowd, but by professional dancers who were booked to entertain the dealers. Although, Mr. Willys was slightly out of breath after the dance, he was still batting 10(1 per1 cent mentally and delivered a talk in which he gave the dealers and distributors much food for thought. Which Battery? You won't be satisfied with a car unless you are satisfied with the battery. The Willard Threaded Rub ber Battery not only gives the right service to begin with, but keeps on giving it, and actually outlasts the battery plates. The plates are insulated not merely separated. And the Threaded Rubber Insulation neither warps, cracks, nor punc tures, because unlike wood separators, it is not affeced by battery acid. Drive around. Ask questions. Nebraska Storage Battery Co. 20th and Harney Sts. s Omaha Wilkfdt Batteries Announcement made by the Chev rolet Motor company that it will make a cash refund to all purchasers of model "Four-Ninty" automobiles is proving very popular with those who are in the market for cars. The commanding position of the company in the automobile world naturally in spires confidence in the plan and more than usual interest in the buy ing public. In the light of the Chevrolet sales record it is regarded as certain that 50,000 Chevrolet "Four-Ninety" cars will be sold by August 1, in which event the refunds of $70 on open cars and light delivery wagons and $100 on closed cars will reach the total of about $4,000,000. The large production capacity and up-to-date equipment of Chevrolet factories are well known and the ability of the energetic manufactur ing organizations to utilize the best quantity production methods is r:c ognized as responsible for the low price at which Chevrolet "Four Ninetv" cars can be sold. Under its new plan the purchaser is assured of this particular model at the lowest possible price, and he participates in the effort of the com pany to stimulate production and encourage prosperity. He directly benefits by the refund to himself of actual cash. That the announcement proved of great interest to purchasers all over the country is evidenced by the heavy increases m siles reported by Chev rolet dealers and retail 6torcs the last week. A Sign of Interest, She was young and inclined to take her- troubles too seriously, I decided when a certain attractive lookin' girl walked in today for ad vice. "Ciirlie," I says without introduc tion, "anybody weariu' a nifty spring suit like you're sportin' this morning ought to be chirpin' with the robins and bloomin with the buttercupsl Why the worried frown?" "Well," she sighs, glancin' down without interest at the blue serge model and the neat gray footgear, "the tilings I wear don't matter- to me now! I can't take an interest in clothes any more, for nothing that I wear seems to please Harry.".. "Dear mel" I remarks. "I don't see how any- man would have the heart to criticise that little costume you're draped in this morning. It's a winner! Tlenty of dash and style without overdoing the .ideal" I look her over approvin'ly from hat to toe, and there's not a blemish on the landscape. . "Well,1' She assures me, "Harry has not only criticised this costurtv:, but every other one I've worn re cently. And the way I dress is not all that displeases him. Many of the things I do annoy him, too." "Has he always been like this, dearie," I inquires. "No," she answers. "It's only a matter of the last few months. He used to ' be perfectly normal just like the other boys I've known.- But recently he seems to think I ought to retire to a convent, or wear a veil, like the Turkish ladies when they appear in public. Every dress I put on seems to be too loud or too noticeable or too immodest to suit him. And his accusations are simply ridiculous, for my clothes are all in good taste." "Say, karie," I exclaims, "I'm be ginning to get the drift of your troubles. Harry's going in for ex cess in the dress reform movement and you're the victim." "Furthermore," I proceeds on a guess, "he's not advocating the plan for the rest of the fair and frivolous sex. lie's concentratin' on youl You are the target for all the sug gestions and curtain lectures. You are the one and only elected by nim to elevate the standards of the sex am I right?" "Exactly!" she exclaims. "But how could you know it?" "Just workin on an old story," I answers, "which dates back several thousand years. And an occult in stinct tells me, dearie, that Harry is not adverse to the 'last word from Paris' when he passes it on the treet on a Fair Unknown! "True again 1" she answers. "The latest modes and extreme styles look good to him on another woman. I've noticed that. On the street or on the stage, anywhere he meets them, in fact, he's as quick to give them his interest as other men are. But when I try" to wear something dashing he puts on a face like Piigrim Father and begins to talk about modesty." "He wants me to wear tny skirts below my shoe tops.- He frowns if my V necks are the moderate cut. He's down on my black jet earrings and he insists on my wearing my hair like a great grandmother! I don't dare use a bit of face powder for fear of displeasing him, and he long ago persuaded me to burn my harmless box of rouge! He has the idea that I should look and act like a Salvation Army girl on duty. I can't understand him, but I love him with all my heart and want to please him at any cost." Her lips quiver and I can see that she's trying to choke back a sob or A06 ANNOUNCING Q6? You think Harry's tryin' to lay you on the shelf and label you 19(16. You think .he's tryin' to pack you away in the attic along with the spinning wheel and the enlarged family chromes, hut you never made a worse mistake in your life. The truth of the matter is, everything's srt but the wedding date, and if you're wise you'll start a speedy collection of the trousseau frills, for I'd risk my reputation on a guarantee that you'll need them in side a month's time." "When any man, dearie," I ex plains in answer to the question in her eyes, "starts protectin a girl from the critical gaze of the vulgar multitude, he's as good as surren dered." "It's the sure sign," I says em phatically, "that you're too precious for other male eyes to rest on. He's put you in a baud box and shut down the lid. In other words, dearie, Harry's just promoted you to the rank of the angels, and he's pretty much occupied just now in keepin' your halo on straight. Eventually," I says, "you may be able to powder your nose without causin him pain, but just now, girlie, if I "were you I'dwell, I'd smile to myself and enjoy the compliment. You get me, don't you?" Thompson Feature Servloo Battery Solution i Will Never Wear Out, I Elmer Rosengren Says ''Knowing that some chemicals have a tendency to lose their ttrcngtli after a few months, many car owners suppose that the solu tion in the storage battery has the same failing," say Elmer Kosen pren of the Nebraska Storage Bat tery company. "The belief is not only unfounded, but totally wrong. No matter how hard the service is or how long the battery is used the solution is un harmed. Of course it varies in strength according to the amount ot charge in the battery, being stronger when the battery is charged, and weakening as the charge is used up. As there is no change in the acid held in solution it is never necessary to put in an additional quantity un less 'some slops out of the jars or is lost by leakage." Vise Usefulness Not only is the heavy vise a valu able part of the garage equipment for. its obvious service, but it may oftqp be advantageously used for straightening bent parts. In doing this care should be taken to place the part to be operated on in such a way that the pressure comes against the support of the vise, as this obviates severe strain on the outer jaw and screw thread.
