By HOLLAND. The number of employes who ot their own motion yfnt word a tew (lavs auo to the company which cn plovs them that they are willing to accept a reduction in wases was small. The railroad company for which they work operates a small line in the vicinity of New iork so that the number to which it pay! wages is not large. But the example which was set by those who voluntarily offered to take less money in their pay en velopes than tlii-y had been receiv ing may be followed by employes of other railway companies and, by anil by, perhaps by all who arc thus employed. For the skilled work ers upon one of the larger railway systems of the I'nitetl States, whose eastern terminal is at New York, are now holding consultations with the view of deciding whether they shall or shall not of their own free motion cause word to be sent to the railroad management that they arc willing to accept a reduction in nay. .The payroll of this company milliners many inousanus. Intelligent Men. This movement wa begun by in telligent men, some' of them conduc tors and others engineers. They have been saying to their associ ates that they believe it would be of benefit to the country, to business snd ultimately of benefit to them selves if they were to represent to the railway management that they believe it would be of benefit to the country, to business and ultimately of benefit to themselves if they were to represent to the railway manage ment that they realize that the pur chasing powers of the dollar has in creased and that while they have been receiving wages or salaries es tablished at the time erf the war, nev ertheless they feel that now it may be the better part for them to say that the time has come when it could not be said of railway em ployes that they alone continue to receive wartime pay. There men look at the matter from two points of view. One refors to the advantage It would be to organised labor if It should now come forward atrct say that It Is willing to accept reduetfO wages based probihly upon the Increased earnlntr power of the dollar. Aotinn of that kind would do much probably to bring to the labor organization the high ly favorable consideration of the public. Aanotlier Point of View, Aanother point of -lew refora to the roliillon of transportation to tho induftrml nnd business situation. For If the rail road companies are able, chiefly through a reduction of wages, to overcome the difficulties with which they are now em barrassed thy will In that way stimu late a return to business prosperity. One of the evidence of the difficult!, which the railway managars are now facing is furnished to Industrial corpora tion to which the railroad companies aro debtors. Some of these corporations re port that they are meeting with diffi culty in collecting their bills from the railroad companies. One of the largest of the railroad comparites of the United States is reported to be far behind in 1 payment of some of Its bills. One large corporation Is carrying an account wltlt 1 this railroad company which- has been' overdue for six months. ' It Is recognlied, however, that thU procrastination In the payment of bills is not due to indifference or purposed negleot. It is caused bv the Inability of ! the railroads to obtain sufficient Inc'omo fto meet all their Imperative obligation.-! wn us payrolls, tneri-rore tney have little or no money with which to pay their current hills. Iu other words some of our industries are carrying the rail -mads upon which may be called enforced credit. It is known, however, that r.H soon as the embarrassments are end?d the railroad companies will be as prompt in the payment of their bills as they were before these troublesome time cam.'. Notwithstanding the sluggishness which characterlzpt some part of our busln- life there Is no doubt that In these ehr!" spring weeks a feeling of confidence is evident. There Is little) real 'pessimism. Discussions center upon the time when it may bo reported that Amerlcun bus iness has become normnl. Soma of the predictions fix the end or the present fiscal year as the da:w when it may be confidently reported that our business nnd industrial prosperity is nlmost normal. Some of the Industrial loaders, especially those whose products are not of conmodities which are num bered unions the necessaries of life, pre dict that restoration will not be com plete until about the end of this year. All, however, agree that improvement he besrun and that it will continue. By Way of the Canal, Soon after the Panama canal was opened to navigation the Canadian lum bermen upon the Pacific coast dlsrov-red that they could ehlp their lumber from T ancouver to the ports uppn the Atlantic coast by way of the Panama cannl nnd market that lumber even in the midwest more cheaply than American lumber, whirh is transported by railroad could be marketed. The discoverey made by the Canadian lumbermen undoubtedly suggested to the fruit growers of ri-llfornia that thev might he able to market tholr fruit iii tho eHFt. If they used ihe Panama canal, at smaller cost than the transportation of fruit by rail across tho continent en tailed. Th-y appear to hava been rlgh In this conjecture. For they have shipped California fruit by way of the Fanamn canal to Baltimore and placed It upon the market there at a considerably less cost than Uie transportation of that fruit by rail across tho coulnent would bae en tailed. In fact water transportation of fruit from California to H:iltlmnr. n. , New York costs less than are the rail cnarges ror tne transportation of fr-.il'.s and vegetables from Florida to the 111. r. kets of the north.
