I WHY
Is Easter So Called?
The name "Easter," which i. -n
use only among English and Gcr-
p , , , .
strange as it may seem, from fne
name of a .pagan goddess of the
She was the personification of the
spring, of the morning, of the east
where the sun rises, and it is from
her name that we get the word
"east" as applied to one of the cardi
nal points of the compass. The
month of April was dedicated to
this goddess, being called . Easter
monath among the Saxons and An
gles, and is still known in Germany
as Ostcrmonat. Her worship was
a popular one in northern Germany
and was carried to England by the
Saxons, still surviving in some oc
casional ceremonies in conection
with the approach of spring. .
Nations whose language is not de- )
rived from the Teutonic, cling to the
Semetic word which comes in turn
from the A ramie pesach, to pass by,
translated into English as ".Pass
over." Thus the Spanish call Easter
"Pascua." the French speak of "Pa
ques," and the Italian word is "Pas
qua;" terms reminding us of the fact
that the Christian Easter is the suc
cessor to the Hebrew Passover,
though the English word carries u
back to festivals in honor of a pagan
deity.

Make the Most of Yourself.
What is fhe use going around

Why think of each day as one

You have considered your daily

long since ceased to try to change
your schedule. 't
Naturally, if this be the case you
have become resigned to your fate,
and the way you are going will not
alter it any.
And yet you complain that you
