Sometimes, without any apparent
cause, when engaged in " work or
conversation which occupies, the
mind entirely, one will - suddenly
shudder. And then, if he is a super
stitious person, he will at once re
call the old superstition that such a
shudder means that ''Some one is
walking across his grave." This
superstition is an ancient one, hav
iiiR its basis in suggestion, and is
common todav in the rural districts
especially. Of course the person '
seized with the sudden shudder, be
ing stiii alivp has, properly speaking,
no grave. But there is, somewhere,
a spot where his grave will be.
The shudijer is caust-J by. a slight
temporary physical disturbance doe
possibly, to "an" undigested piece of
cheese." But to the 'man super
stitiouslvinclined, the sluuld seems
uncallea for and out .f place; and
what is uncalled, for ami out of place
must be accounted for. Allied to
ignorance is, fear. The iniagiation
demands a working hypothesis of
some kind and grasps at suggestion.
The shudder suggests something
gruesomc-and what c.'uld be more
gruesome tHan one's - own , graver"
But the place of one's owngrave is
always there why should a connec
tion "beJwe'eii it'and its future occu
'pant be set up at that particular
nioiTfent? Ignorance, fear, man's
primitive instinct to try and explain
what he cannot understand the in
gredients of superstition offer the
solution. The "grave" is being dis
turbed" some one is walking across
it." :

more to the inTagination than any
explanation the doctor may give you
of your udden shudder. Besides,
the superstition is so ,much simpler
