Aged Father Bewails Fact Two Sons
Were Captured By Lone Officer
ADVFRTISKMKNT
O'Neill, Neb., March 22. (Spe
cial.) The aged father of Jesse and
Ora Keller stood in the court room
of Judge Frank Campbell in O'Xeill
and openly bewailed the fact that his
two sons had so far degenerated from
the parent stock as to allow a lone
officer of the law to arrest them.
The two young men were arrested
by a state game warden and brought
to O'Neill. They had been found
hunting around Goose Lake in south
ern Holt, the lake at the time being
covered with ducks on the spring
migration north. The men were
charged with hunting without a li
cense and with pursuing prairie
chickens and other game with guns
during the closed season.
A gun play was the feature of the
arrest, Jesse Keller and the warden
exchanging two shots each without
doing any damage.
The father and another brother
were in court when they were fined
and it was the surrender that caused
I the father to plaintively voice his dis
gust. I he lines imposed on the two
offenders tetaled $50, which was a
small part of the expense, however,
as the cost of bringing the men to
O'Xeill, about 50 miles, was included
in the court costs. The guns also
were confiscated.

Trial of Peterson j Claims Against
Brothers Opens j Turkey Outlined
Omahans Charged With False Demands for Damages to
Pretense in Buying American Interests Laid
Merchandise.
Fremont, Neb.. March 22. (Spe
cial.) Three Peterson brothers,
Victor, Theodore and Gilbert, of
Valley and Omaha, went on trial this
afternoon in the district court,
charged with false pretense.
Some time ago the brothers pur
chased large orders of goods from
local merchants amounting to about
$1,700. It was learned later that
some of the merchandise had bee'i
sold to other dealers for a much
lower price. The victims allege that
although the goods were sold on
30 days time, the young men had
schemed to get some ready money
in this manner and then skip the
country.
Their dealings became suspicious
when they purchased automobile
tires from six different tire concerns
in this city, all ' supposed to be for
the :ame car. The merchants allege
that the Peterson trio presented
weird tales of riches to come from
huge land deals that would mater
ialize within 30 days and that they
could then settle their bills.
In the opening statement made to
the jury, attorney for the defense ex
plained that the boys were "hard
up" ?nd bought and sold the goods
in order to tide them over a strin
gent period. As soon as the date
of payment fell due, the attorney
ctated. the bills would have bee;i
paid. Testimony was taken from
H. W. Buller, tire dealer, this af
ternoon, bearing out the complaint
of 'he state.
Lower Tarif Schedule
Urged by Senator Edge
Xew York, March 22. An exces
sive high range of tariff must be
modified if the United States expects
to do business in the world market,
Senator Edge of New Jersey said
today in an address.
Touching on the "tremendous
problems" which the new adminis
tration is facing, he asked that the
American people "be a little pa
tient." "We have a program," he said, "a
clearly defined program, but there
may be some differences as to the
way it is to be put over."
Cuban Lieutenant Is Shot
In Argument Over Editorial
Havana. March 22. Lieutenant
Jardiens of the Cuban army is dead
and Carlos Martinez Anaya, editor
of Sol of Santiago De Cuba, is in
jail as the result of a shooting affray
which occurred in the offices of the
newspaper yesterday.
Tht affair was the outcome of an
editorial comment regarding ex
aminations held under Lieutenant
Jardines' supervision, according to a
special to El Mundo.
Before Conference.
Boston, March 22. Claims for
reparation for damage to American
interests in Turkey were outlined
by Dr. J. L. Barton, chairman of
the Near East relief committee, who
has just returned from London,
where he laid the claims before the
conference of allied premiers. He
acted in behalf of American mis
sionary, educational and philanthrop
ic organizations in Turkey.
The brief says thafy since the
Ottoman empire is passing from
Turkish control, the American wel
fare institutions maintain that their
rights on religious liberty, use of
the English language, freedom from
interference, acquisition of property
and equality of other educational,
philanthropic and religious establish
ments should be preserved.
It enumerates more than 25 char
tered philanthropic corporations or
ganized and financed by Americans
in Turkey, including the American
board of commissioners for foreign
missions, the Presbyterian board of
missions. Robert college and the
American college for girls at Con
stantinople. The brief says that these and other
American organizations have ex
pended more thr.n $70,000,000 and
that the annual expenditure is in
excess of $1,000,000, aoart from the
$10,000,000 or $12,000,000 given an
nually for the care of native orphans
and for the support of destitute
refugees.
