N Market, Financial" and Industrial News of the Day Financial By ALEXANDER DANA NOYES Chicago Xiibuae-Omaha Uee Leased H ire. New York, March L?. An early further decline in prices on the stock exchange todav was tolloweu by liarp recovery which left the market with net advances lor the day run ning above 1 point in many stocks, both railway and industrial. The first hour of business brought Active selling, apparently by professional speculators, of a few industrial share and in these stocks declines of 2 'to 3 points occured. But the railway etocks held firm with the single exception of Reading and this, absence of the previous day's pres sure of sales caused a change in the market as a whole, before the close. Few- of the active shares failed to close at better prices than the'day before. t It was a market without news to influence it and wafuauifestly gov erned" by the repurchases of stocks sold for the decline in the two prrj ceding dayt of rapidly falling prices. Such a halt is not at all uncommon at the end of a week. It indicates at least that speculative selling was the dominating influence in the de cline of Friday and Thursday. t Sew low Records. Measured by today's closing prices, de clines for the week havo, on the whole, been more severe ' and general than in any week of tho present year to date and the majority of active slocks, though not by r.ny means all of them, havo touched the year's low prices.,, Apparently preparations fo- tho largo Income and profits tax payments of next week were reflected In the federal re serve statemcntsjktubllshed as usual after the close uf the markets. Redlucounted bills lnoressed $26,900,000 In tho entlro system, but the increase at the New York Reserve bank alone was $29,300,000 and the $22,000,000 Increase In reserves held for private banks waa similarly all ac counted for by the New York account. The addition of $20,900,000 to their re serve )n- the federal bank by the Now YorktClty clearing house Institutions, along 'with a decrease of $62,300,000 In the loans of those Institutions, partly as a result of the stock exchange liquida tion, brought the surplus reserve of the associated banks to the highest figure since the first week of last October. , Increase In Ret, err e Rates. "With the week's expansion In redis counts and deposit liabilities, the federal reserve system could naturally show no such Improvement of position as had marked most of Its weekly reports this Star. Tho reserve ratio, nevertheless, in creased from 50.8 per cent to 60.9, which compares with 42' per cent a year ago and with 46H per cent at tho end , of 1920, whereas the reserve rstlo of this date last year was SH per cent below the previous December's final figure and nearly 9 per ctnt under that of a year before. This gives a plain view of the present season's real strengthening in position of the Central reserve. The notable allow ing of the reserve statement, however, waa in 'the account of note circulation, which decreased $36,771,000. the largest reduction since the third week of Janu ary. Since the beginning of the year out standing notes have now decreased $328, 800,000, or very nearly 10 per cent. In the corresponding period of 1920 their net Increase had been $10,000,000. The Reliable Cofuignnient House" Omaha,' Nebraska Chicago Grain By CHARLES D. MICHAELS. Chlcsmo Tfbune-Omah Bee Leased Wire. Chicago, March 12. Liquidation and lowei orices marked the grain markets ii. t.i; closing hour, although in the early trading prices advanced. The close was tame and at the inside figure. Bullish news cut no figure. The lack of outide buying support, with the discoui jgement toward the last of those who had tried to ad vance prices, was the market's un doing:. Closing tradj were at losses of 33f4C on wheat, J$c on corn,c on oats,'9i3c on tyr., 'Jury lead ing; 3-4C- on barley, 50c on pork and 5c on lard whife ribs were unchanged to 5c higher. v Although shaq-tulRes live been on in grains at times during the last week, the week's finisfr was well toward the inside figures, with whiat off 11J4S,12c, cornl2c, oats J'jfi) X',c, rye, 6J510J4C the latter on July; Parley 2c, pork 33c, lard 45o, ribs 15c, as compared with a week ago. Prices AdTance Early. Wheat orices advanced litl3c enrly on buying based on reports of wet weathet and higher prices In Argentina. Con firmation of 1,000,000 bushels sold fot export on Friday and the report that the acreage In central provinces was 18 per cent short, also- were factors. The estimate this year of tho provinces re ported so far Is 87,000,00-bushels, against 142,000,000 bushels last year, whereas the government estimate of 166,000,000 bushels as the surplus and carryover of the United States and Canada for the balance of the season was construed as Indicating there are 85,000,000 bushels available for export. Several large local traders were liberal early buyers of wheat, hut ( later they turned to the selling side. Stop order selling became general from $1.63 down, May making a break to $1.60. The leading elevator Interest that 4s long on March had It on the market openly and through brokers, ths spread being 88c. Break In March Wheat, The late break was started by a drop In March wheat In Minneapolis to 1c under May for the first time this season, with deliveries there of 400.000 bushels on. March contracts, which were taken by local and outside millers, i Minneapolis offered, round lots of No. 3 dark northern spring whest here at equal to 9o under March, or better than a delivery basis. Houses with Omaha connections were large sellers of future and sold 20,000 bushels of No. 3 hard at lc over March here, Vhlle later In tho day 1c over was the best bid. Export sales at the sea board were 400,000 bushels, confirmed ofter the -close. Crop reports were generally favorable, and with the economio conditions, created extreme bearlshneas. TheVcorn trade waa not large, being de pendent mainly upon the action of wheat, although losses were so small, with ft range of 6970c on May and the finish st the bottom. Primary receipts of 9,953,000 bushels were 5,039,000 bushels over last year's and 927,000 bushels below the previous weeks. Green bur damage In oats helped the market for a, time, but prices declined lc and May finished around 4243c. Crop prospects were favorable. Tho week s movement showed an Increase at the primaries of 848.000 bushels over last year. Pressure was on July rye and it broke 3c with the. close at $1.18 and May off only c. TH Notes. The Impression among the conservative people In the grain trade is that, barring accidents to the wheat crop, it will take fireatly increased export buying anil a Ighter country movement to sustain values around tne present level. The one thing against all the grain niarkws is tho light outside trade, tho bearlshnesa of the general public and the disposition to go slow on the buying side until there Is something brought out that appeals to speculators in general to Induce them to take hold. There In to be a decreased movement of grain in the central west as Indicated by tho loadingt reports of the various rail roads. Farmers sre not selling and are gntting too busy in the fields. All tho commission houses continue "to report de creased offerings. It is said that tho renters and movers have sold the hulk of their corn and that others are holding on. Omaha has been selling No. 2 hard wheat In Chicago for more than a week past. The' trado does not take It readily, regarding the price too lilpii. Minneapolis offered one block of 100,000 bushels of No. 3 dark northern hard at equal to 9c under Chicago, March, Minne apolis welghtB and grades. Buyers here prefer to take it on Chicago weights. Tho weakly weather forecast is for cold and unsettled with rains and snows over the greater part of the agricultural regions. Unseed Oil: Duluth. Minn., March 12.
