I changed the subject abruptly, for
the mention of the sewing machine
had brought to my mind an auda
cious little plan. Perhaps I could
absolutely avoid any explanation to
Dicky of the wreckage the marauders
had caused in ,thc contents of my
keepsake trunk.'
Madge's Plan.

over there, and if you'll attend to that
end of the work I'll take the rest.
If 1 have a specialty it is hemming,
and I suppose that will form the
bulk of the work."
"Why?" Lilfian turned an atten
tive face toward inc. I knew from
her tone that she guessed I had some
special reason for the request.
Because Dicky is coming out on
the 4 o'clock train to look over the
damage, and I thought"
"Of course!" she interrupted. "We
must get that stuff of yours back in
the trunk before he conies. The rest
of the house doesn't niattcf! L-won-der'

laughed. "She'll talk about letting
you take 'a piece.' and things like
that, but she really has quite an
elaborate little meal wailing for our
return from the stalirjn."
A Sharp Question.
"f ought to. censure her. but my
tummy won't let me," Lillian com
mented. "I'm simply starved. And
really, there isn't such a mountain of
work to do on these draperies. Some
