The optimistic bunker, farmer and
merchant of this section hclieves that
the worst f the business tlcpre.ssion
throughout the country is over, anil
that conditions will soon reach their
normal state. While farmers have
been holtliu their grain for vim e
weeks for holier prices, a considera
ble amount oi it has been marketed,
especially by those who have needed
fluids tor immediate use.
So far. fiane county, which lies in
the Blue vallev i one of the rich
est farming and dairying sections of
the state, has been able to weather
the" stormy financial seas, and better
times are'predictrd within the ncTct
few months.
Paper Not Rediscounted.
Bankers report that they have re
discounted very little paper, and in
most instances thev are willing to
loan to the conservative farmer and
merchant if they need financial aid
to tide them over. Merchants report
business ,at a standstill and because
of bad roads few people in the coun
trv have been able to visit the city
to do their trading, evidently prefer-

prove and prices are better.
It has been months since any
farms or city property have changed
hands because of the tight money
market, and ntost people who have
any extra money prefer to hold it in
stead of investing in real estate
or letting it get into the hands of
blue-sky salesmen. Landowners in
Gage county who disposed of their
holdings during the period of in
creasing real, estate values did not
invest elsewhere, but placed their
money in the banks, as a general
rule In many instances this is be
ing borrowed by the farmer and
stock ra'er who brve security.
Tenants Hard Hit.
The farm teii.int seems to be hard
hit in (iage like in other sections of
the state and he is in a tight place
unless he can borrow money. Gen
erally speaking, tenants contracted
farms for cash rent, evidently think
ing that the high market prices
Would continue and .vhen the crash
came he received a hard jolt. Most of
this class of farmers are thrifty and
willing to work hard, and they are
usually able to get credit until they
can market another crop and get on
their feet.
In many respects xthey are in bet
ter shape than the merchant who
has thousands of dollars invested
in high-priced goods which he will
be obliged to let co at a loss. Few
of them have been making money

since the downward trend of prices,
and it will be sonic time before the
will recover from their losses which
they are obliged to stand like the
farmer and stockmen who lost heav
ily when prices hit the toboggan on
cattle and hogs.
Remedies Are Offered,
Various remedies are offered by
business .men for the present busi
ness ' depression, such as the issu
ance of long-time refunding securi
ties by the government to do away
with the ever-inci easing issuance o?
short-time certificates of indebted
ness; stabilizing of the foreign ex
change rate; re-establishment of the
farm loan bank, stabilizing of prices,
etc.
H. IT. Waite, cashier of the Be?
atrice State bank, says relative to
the situation: "We are iloaning to
the farmers and assisting them
in every way possible. While lit
tle grain is being marketed, I look
for a big change with the beginning
of spring."
George Ideus. a farmer living
northeast of Beatrice: "I market
ed $1,000 worth of grain this week,
and. while I received not half as
much as I did last year for the
same amount, 1 ieel that 1 must be
satisfied like o'hcrs who arc also
losers. My crops were the best I
.have raised in years."
Merchants Stand Strain.
