the annual report of the federal re
serve hoard, that "the utmost can
lie taken to conserve our credit and
preserve the basis of our prosperity,"
lo avoid the extreme conditions pre
vailing in other countries:
"Upon the United States in a largi
measure," the governor declared
"the solvency and financial stability
of many other countries depend."

possible if. American raw materials

ed period against long time credits.

000,000 in 1919.
Banks Show Worth.
Rediscount operations between
federal reserve banks, including biils
purchased from other federal rcscne
banks during the vcar, amounted to
$3,676,729,000, as compared with
32,658,254,000 in 1919 and $660,638,
000 during the year 1918. Adding
to these transactions the bills pur
chased and allotted to other federal
reserve banks by the federal reserve
bank of New York the governor
said the total inlerdistrirt movement
of htlfs during the year aggregated
$4,403,686,000, as compared with .
$3,397,753,000 for 1919 and $835,498,- '
000 for 1918.
The board has no further amend
ments to the federal reserve act to
suggest to congress at this time,
Governor Hardinp announced. "I:
desires, however." he concluded, "to
express its opposition to any legis
lation which would impair the abilitv
of the federal reserve banks to exer
cise the proper control over their
credit transactions."
