active and both shippers and packers
bought freely at prices anywhere from a
dime to around a quarter higher. The
average trade was quoted at 1525c ad
vance. Bulk of the receipts changed
hands at $8.509.15. with top hogs bring
ing $9.25. Omaha hog receipts thla week
have keen liberal and, while the gen
eral trend to value has been downward,
attended by a very wide range of values,
average trade la closing hardly more than
35 40c under a week ago. Best light
hogs here last Saturday tapped at $9.66.
Shesp No sheep or lambs were received
today and nrices In the live mutton trade
remained unchanged. The tendency to
values on fat lambs has been quite a
little lower this week and current values
show a decline of around 75c$1.00. Best
fat lamb are now bringing $8.5 althougli
same class of stock would have sold up
to $9.26 at last weeks close. Heavy
lambs are quoted down to $6.50. Fat
sheep have not been very plentiful lately
and this branch of the trade shows no
appreciable change, as compared with a
week ago. Good ewes are still moving
around $4.004.35. The feeder market Is
fully $1.00 lower for the week In sym
pathy with the drop in fat lamb prices.

Chicago, 111., Feb. 12. All United
States grain markets were closed to
day, owing to Lincoln's birthday.
Winnipeg was the only market open.
Traders who were around the com
mission offices expressed divergent
opinions. The only thing that stood
out strongly wai the light outside
trade, and the smallest receipts, con
sidering the easy car situation. This
was attributed to bad roads in the
country and to unsatisfactory prices.
.Winnipeg wheat prices started
around the highest of the day at
declines of over 1c and broke $$c
on May and ljsc on July; wheat,
with the close of VAc lower on
May and 2c off on July. Trading
was solely with an easy undertone
and no news. A wire from Winni
peg to Logan & Bryan said. there
was no news, with outside interest
light and nothing definite upon
which to base operations.
Cash continues to show indepen
dent strength, the holding attitude
of producers thus resulting in a
tight cash condition. We look for
a trading affairs with a view to
accepting quick profits on either
side.

New York, Feb. 13. Not much
can be said of the past week's finan
cial markets, except that tlicy re
flected indecision, unreadiness to sus
tain a movement of rates or prices
in either direction and therefore an
alternation of momentary advances
or declines, followed by return of
inertia.
Such occasional activity as oc
curred, sometimes in one direction
and sometimes in the other on the
stock market, the money market, the
loieign exchange market and the
commodity markets, would reverse
itself so quickly as to indicate only
the lack of any strong force maki'ig
for a chaiijte in values. It is
naturally .-.slicd u,cn this will end,
ai(d the markets resume a definite
movement.
With six weeks of the new vear
now completed, it is possible to take
a larger view of the trend of the
financial situation. That sonic 'ex
pectations rather confidently enter
tained at the end of December have
thus far been disappointed, every one
knows. Both in Wall street and on
the foreign money markets it had
been widely predicted that last vcar's
prolonged reduction in speculative
credit, along with the very great de
crease in actual trade requirements
resulting, both from the shrinkigc
of production and trade and from the
40 per cent fall in the average price
of merchandise, would occasion rapid
decline in money rates.
Lower Money Due.
December' large requisitions for vear
ond business settlements hud postponed the
readjustment; with those out of the way,
the lower money market should be at
hand.

paper has been quoted this week on Wall

and the rediscount rate, hoth at the Bank
of England and at our federal reserve, i

Deflation Not Complete.
The seemingly necessary inference, even
after allowing for the treasury's heavy
short-term borrowings, would be that the
deflation of credit has not yet been com
pleted, that an execessive amount of hsnk
resources are still tied up In the ill-judged
obligations Incurred a year ago. which the
borrowers either cannot or will not liqui
date. This, In fact. Is the sctual situation.
The trouWIe from that cause, which con
verged dlroftly on New York last autumn.

pletion, even of New York's banking sur

When It Is asked what is to end such
conditions, the only snswer Is that they
must bo termlr.tted In the western and
southern states, as their acute form was
terminated In New York last December.
The erisls In such a financial situation
Is always reached later In the interior
communities than at New York.
Change Due Soon.
The time cannot now be very far dis
tant when this situation will change In
the Interior as It has already changed at
New York. Notwithstanding the prevalent
Idea that the beginning of January will
Introduce new financial conditions. It Is
the usual experience that the first two
or three months of a 1 ew year will. In
the main, continue the conditions pre
valent In the preceding months.
The change In financial movement after
the early reaction following the armis
tice came In March and April of 1919:
the change from the speculative Inflation
of trade and prices came in March and
April of 192).
It Is reasonable to expect In the same
period of 1921 the development of such
new Influences as are likely to prevail
during the rest of the present year.
At least two elements In the situation
can be pretty safely reckoned on the
real roadjustm?nt of retell prices because
retailers will, by that time, be getting
the full advantage of reductions In whole
sale markets, and the completion of In
terior debt readjustment because farm
ers and merchants who are preparing
for a new season will have to clear off
their old obligations first.
