Chicago Writer
To Give Story of
Wilson-House Row
Popularity of President's Ad
viser During Paris Peace
Conference Led to Break
In Friendship.
Chicago Tribune-Omaha. Be Leased Wire.
Chicago, Feb. 12. Percy Ham
mond, literary and dramatic critic
for the Chicago Tribune, in his
column today, gives the inside story
of the break between President Wil
son and Col. b. Al. House. Mr.
Hammond spent some time in Paris
when the peace conference was under
way. Here is his version:
"Since this is a column of gossip
this morning it may be permissible
to recite a story told in the corridors
of the Crillon in the latter days of
the peace conference. It is about the
eclipse of the flaming friendship be
tween the oresident and Colonel
House, his morgantic secretary of
state, to repeat the mot of a Chicago
woman. Hie rrench, British and
Italian prime ministers in their un
official visits to Mr. Wilson, the story
says, had found him disinclined to
the earthly or brass tack mood. He
was sincerely disposed to the stained
glass postures of a haloed crusader,
but much too eloquent for busy Euro
pean statesmen. So they formed the
habit of calling on the more taciturn
Colonel House in his modest apart
ments to get the president's views
less wordily and to intimate to him
their own.
"Air. Wilson was visiting Colonel
House when the British premier's
card came up. The colonel gracious
ly excused by the president, returned
soon after and resumed the conver
sation. A few minutes later M.
Clemcnceau asked for a private in
terview and again Colonel House
bowed himself out with apologies.
"He had been back but a short
time when sig. . UNancio was an
nounced, requesting a moment's con
ference. Mr. Wilson waited once
more and upon Colonel House's re
joining him said nothing of annoy
ance at the contretetneps. But, ac
cording to the casual historians of
the Crillon, the incident darkened
the landscaoe of a creeat friendship
and the president and the Texan
were intimate no more. The story
is harmless for it blames neither;
and it has a foundation of truth suf
ficient to be in the manuscript of an
other impending history of Ameri
can diplomacy alone and imperiled
in a great city."

Possibilities.
St. Aueustine. Fla.. Feb. 12.

snprtilation here.
Once conceded to have first call

recently regarded as a less formida
ble contender tor tne place, Mr,
Dawes has become one of the tnys

that his call was not the result ot
formal appointment made at Mr.
Hardine's reauest.
Others with whom Mr. Harding

German Exporters!
Balk on U. S. Tariff
Proposfe to Show They Can't!
Flood Markets of -America.
Berlin, Feb. 12. Representatives
of German export manufacturers at
a meeting here today voted to me
moralize the American governmental
bodies dealing with tariff matters,
setting forth present conditions
among German workiugmen and
the German industries, and supply
ing all available data on German'
production. This documentary mat
ter is intended as an argument not
only that there is no purpose on the
part of Germany to dump cheap
German wares on the American
market, but that it would be impos
sible for it to do so.
In speeches at the meeting, ex
porters declared the workmen were
highly paid, and would work only
six hours a day.
Committees were named to collect
data from every important export
industry for submission to America.
Judge Releases Boy
Held on Theft Charge;
Scores Head of Bank'
Chicago Tribnnc-Omalia Bee Leased wire.
Chicago', Feb. 12. "This young
man was notoriously underpaid.
The elevator men here in the federal
building get more. Responsibility
lies with the directors of your bank
and not with the boy."
In this unusual manner Federal
Judge K. M. Landis addressed James
Catlin, president of the National City
bank of Ottawa, 111., and immediately
released Francis J. Carey, 19, on his
own recognizance after the youth had
confessed to taking $96,500.
Testimony showed that Carey re
ceived a salary of $90 a month, that
he handled an average of $35,000 in
cash each day and that he was the
partial support of an aged mother.
"I must send this boy away some
where," the judge continued. "But
I am not going to send him to
Leavenworth. Boy, you go home
with your mother until I have time
to think it over."
It was shown that al! of the money
had been returned to the bank.

In Drainage Canal
Chicago Tribune-Omaha Be Leased Wire.
Chicago Feb. 12. The multilated
body of a woman, the feet tied with
a piece of clothes line, was found

of decomposition, lies the only pos
sible clew to the woman's identity,
police declare.
. Deputy Coroner Dietrich, after ex
amining the body, declared it had
been in the water for over five and
possibly six months.
Congress Asked to Provide
Additional Room for Funds
Washington, Feb. 12. Congress
was asked to provide more space

of all gold to the federal treasury
here and has choked the great vault,
Assistant Secretary Gilbert told the
house public buildings committee.
An extra vault should be provided,
he said.
