a THE BEE: OMAHA, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 5. 1921. 9 Baker Says Bill 2 Would Restrict Size of Loaves Jay Burns Asserts Smith Mcas ,ure Denies Privilege of " Selling Dread in Weight Asked by Purchaser. ' r jay burns, president of the Burns Baking company, wishes to make clear certain features of the bill which has been offered in the legis lature by State Representative Ed A. Smith of Omaha. Mr. Burns' statement follows: "The article in The Bee, February 4, under Lincoln date line-is very deceptive as to the purpose of the so-called Smith bill. - "It says:r 'Oue little bill intro duced by Representative Ed A Smith of Omaha would force bakers to sell their bread by the pound or the frac tion of the pound and label the amount of bread that is in every loaf.' "Bread always lias been 'sold by the pound in Omaha and for many years it hag been the custom of the Omaha bakers to label every loaf hi plain figures with its weight. The Smith bill seeks to force the making of bread in three sizes only and to deny the bakers the privilege of seal ing bread, as every other food ar ticle is sold, in any quantity which may be desired by the purchaser. "It is unforunate that such decep tive statements should appear con cerning this oft-recurring bread controversy-ran d the public should have the opportunity to understand the exact situation. t "The federal law, as well as the Nebraska law, covering the market ing of package foods, requires that the weight of the contents of flic package shall be plainly stated on the package, but gives the liberty to the producer to sell the- package in any size provided that the weight is plainly indicated. This the bakers have been doing for years, but this, the Smith bill, if it becomes a law, would prevent them from doing." He was so dressed up and stylish looking I hardly knew him. After shaking nands 1 re marked upon his appearance and he laughed and replied: "Yes this is my wife's doings. She discovered; a store where men's- f uraishings are so inexpensive and so smartthat I can well af ford to dress this way and still save money." i "Let me tell you " 'about the experience I had a short time ago," he continued. "I went into the Bur-gess-Nash . Company Store and .the first thing that took my eye was a counter of the best looking ties I had seen for many ( a day. They were ' i made of the finest , v domestic silks in as handsome designs as you could possibly find. I made up my mind that I - must have one no matter how much they cost. Can you imagine my surprise when the clerk told me they were priced at $1.50. He also showed me several beauties at only $3.50. "While I was waiting for my change I discovered a table of good quality lisle hose, at only 40c a pair, just about 2 of what I had previously paid for them elsewhere. Let me tell you, things were so inexpen sive there that I laid in quite a supply before I went out, in cluding several .suits of those medium weight Egyptian cot- 4A. ?i ' L 11 1 . , iuu umuu buns at me iow price i of $1.75. "I went out with a couple of dandy shirts under my aim that were on special, and I also bought a new hat, a Borsolina. They" also had hats from Berg, E. V. Connett and Mallory. Just ' take a tip from an old friend and go there today and get a new outfit. It certainly is a good place to go if you want to be in style and not spend much nloney." . After hearing his story I laughed and re plied: "That's nothing new to me I discovered that Burgess-Nash was the place for men to trade long ago. Why just jook at this-suit and over coat I have on. I was in their store yester- r -day and got them at prices lower than I bave seen any where in this town considering the splendid qual ity, style and workmanship.
