her shabby near-seal coat and re
moved her rather smart, yet home
made, brown .turban and sighed.
"I don't see how you can endure
me at all, Isabelle," she murmured,
more to herself than to her hostess.
"Oh, Isabelle, yon've so much to be
thankful for! How on earth did it
ever happen, anyway?"
Isabelle Channering smiled happi
ly, as she glanced about her spacious
new home. "Isn't it wonderful,
Doris dear, that all this should ever
happen to just poor little me?
Joseph lias simply showered me with
luxuries! Sometimes I. pinch my
self to see if it isn't only a dream."
Doris Kent curled up comfortably
into one of the mammoth tapestry
chairs, near the tire. It seemed a
little . unfair that Isabelle, her dear
est girlhood chum, should have conte
into all this wealth and prosperity,
and a famous husband as well while
she and Richard must content them
selves with a cheap little three-room
apartment, which in spite of ifs
cheapness, was really more than they
cauld afford 1 Of course all this
might not go on forever if certain
people dies, or if Dick got his raise
or something but it wasn't prob
able. Dear old Dick! He was still
wearing his army overcoat which she
had cut off and remodeled a bit. Oh,
it was unthinkable!
Doris' envy of her friertd's pros
perity was not malicious, it was
more a pitiuil empty wanting; a
wanting to discard her hateful shab
by clothes, and walk out of the
cheap, noisy little apartment house,
and feel fresh and young and gay,
once njwre!
Isabw!e drove her friend home in
her smirt limousine. "It's just a lit
tle surprise from Joseph," she ex
plained gleefully, like a child with
a new doll. Doris, with tears, dan
gerously near the surface, only
smiled. There was a strange bitter
ness in licr heart.

out Dick with one of his good-na
tured grins, as Dons stood framed
in the doorway. "Here I come home
early to surprise the wife and find
her out chasing around as usual.
Now what can the poor, hungry,
overworked husband do but burn the
spuds himself?"
He was so disarmingly good-natured,
this husband of hers, so ap
palnugly light-hearted, fie would
never quarrel. His stalwart frame
was draped in one of her kitchen
aprons. How fanny he looked bend
ing over the sink! She laughed in
spite of herscli -
It was several days later before
she had the courage to tell ' him
something of the bitterness that was
eating at her heart.
"Dick, dear, what are we getting
out of life, anyway, you and 1 r
We're just drifting aimlessly I

lionaire, father of Herbert P. Crane,
jr., who is charged with hiring at
tacked a 13-year-old girl j'n Lincoln
park, has taken his son back into his
graces and js now prepared to stand
by him in his fight to prove that he
is innocent of the grave charges.
Several years ago it is said there
was an estrangement between the
father and son and the young man
was turned out of the home and
given a small monthly allowance.
Father and son were reconciled
today when Crane senior came to ser
in's son at the home of Mrs. Sarah

Crane has lived at the home of Mrs.
Frizelle for some years and she says
she is his foster mother. He re
turned there hist Friday, showin
the effects of one day in a cell
after he had been released on $10,000
bonds.
Young Crano is said by the police
to have confessed to the crime, but
he emphatically denies that he ever
made a confession and asserts that
he is the victim of a "frame-up" by
relatives who are trying to keep him
from getting possession of his moth
er's estate.
Mr. Crane refused to comment on
the, estrangement or, the reconcilia
tion with his son, but said that he
was prepared to stand by him
through the ordeal of his trial.
