to remind mc of that never-to-be for
gotten pay day for the bridge ganif
when . the old 222 went fhroup;t tiie
bridge into the river at Cherryvillc.',
' The Elephant was the crack en
gineer on the division and he went
into the drink along with the hip; en
gine. It was one of the most leai
ful wrecks I ever saw, but the
f-trange thing about it, considering
the circumstances, was that not a,
life was lost. !
It was pay day on the line and aa
it happened. I was paymaster .on the
division. Ye had a special car ou
a specialnruii, kind of reviving tl'
c.-stom of long ago when the pav
train always was a special. It was
the '222, with the Elephant in the
tab, that was assigned to pull the:
pay car from the division tormina!
I' had a short chat with the Ele
phant before we started and I no
ticed that he was rather morose over
something. The Elephant usually is
a mountain of cheerfulness and it
was natural that I sluyild press him
for the cause of his glumnessl
"Something's eoiu' to happen to
this train before we ge tsinto Chcrrv,"
lie said with conviction. "It'.s goin'
to be the first wreck I ever had an
I hate to see it comin'."
Of course I laughed at him, but
the jinx had taken a firm hold on
his shoulder and would ' not be
shaken from its perch. I saw that it
was no use talking to him. for he
was solid in the conviction that
trouble lay on the track somewhere
this side of Cherryville. So I went
hack into my car and started sort
ing out the pay checks.
The pay trains in those days never
were ;' expected to carry anything
extra But once in a while a rush
shipment was coupled on behind
to hurry it .across the division.
At LongatJre we were stopped. A
car of blasting powder had been set
out there by the L, O. W.. and we
had orders to deliver it to the bridge
gang at Cherryville.
The Elephant grumbled, but be
ing a good engineer he did not refuse
to obey orders. But he swore feel
ingly whenever he "thought of the
car of nowder hooked on behind him.
"As if I didn t have enough
trouble "an my hands, he growled,
"they have to load me down with a
car of blasting powder. This is sure
my unlucky day.
"An' say," he called back as he
pulled out of Longaere,,"you better
be ready to jump when I give the
danger signall"
I laughed once more. But I
noticed that the Elephant's face was
drawn and white, so tragic that it got
on my nerves and every time the
whistle sounded up ahcadI strained
my, "ears to catch a note' of
warning I almost half expected to
hear. : -

we got out of Longacre and by th?
time we ncarcd Cherryvillc we must
have ben doing near 50 miles an
hour. I had noticed a little smoke
quite a ways back but iiad paid scant
attention to it. Smoke from the
engine frequently swirled dow'n
through the car and jt was not. until
1 detected a strong bd'or of burnmsr
wood that I thought anvthing of
it.
I rushed to the rear , of my car
aiid my heart leaped in my throat as
1 discovered the entire eivd of the
powder car behind in flames. At i
that moment we were square in the
heart of Chcrrvvillc. I yanked the
engine cord and the train jolted to
a stop. The Elephant and his fire
man leaped down and ran back to
learn the reason of the signal, but
they did not need to ask.
"My God!' cried Ike Elephant as
he caught sight of the car, wliich
now was burning well back toward
the middle. The engineer stood and
stared. for a second," his face; even
whiter than before. Then he sprang
in action. )
"Quick!" he Vricd. "Put your
checks in the safe and roll it out the
door!" I did so. but before I had
completed the task and dropped
again to the ground, the train was
moving ahead. Looking farther I
saw that the draw in the bridge, a
quarter of a mile beyond, was wide
open!
"What are vou doing i.ian?" 1
yelled up at the engineer as I ran
alongside the cab. "Have you gone
crazv?"
"Tin goin' to save thi- town!" he

home. Flanking the railroad on each
side of me were huge factories in
W'hich labored scores of men and
'women. Half a block away was a
huge oil station with its row after
row. of steel tanks glistening .in the
un.
.. Had the car .of powder let go right
there the property Joss must have
been terrible and the casualty list
big. Had an. explosion ignited some
of that oil, half a block away, no
ddubt the entire town would have
been wiped out. j '
T!c Elephant had elected to sac
rifice his own little life that the
town might be 'saved!' . , 1
Still I stood - rooted to the spot,
watching in horror the swiftly, re
ceding columns of smoke that
marked the burning powder car be
hind the Elephant's roaring locomo
tive. "The damn foo!. I cried under
my breath.
"Not hjin!'' growled an excited
voice at my elbow and I whirled to
face the fireman. "He's making
himself an immortal hero!"
I noticed the fireman's hat was off
and shame-faced' that I had not done
so before. I snatched off mv cap.
When I looked after the clcphai t
again he was going full tilt at the
ope;i draw. A second later there
was a sudden flash, a whirl J. of
steam andj the base of the smoke
column snot ciownwaru.
A moment later came the sound of
a tremendous crash and a giant hiss
ing. A cloud of steam hung over
the bridge for a moment, then melted
away and all was still.
I covered my face with my hands.
Heside me I heard the fireman sobi
bing heavily.
Sick at heart with the horror of
it, I caught the next trnin back. Like
a coward I fled from the division.
The thought of The, Elephant and
his supreme sacrifice rose up and
blurred my mind. It was weeks be
fore I rcaily became myself again.
It was three yca-s before f re
turned again to the division. Then
one day I . dropped into division
headquarters while on a trip eas'.
The division superintendent. Burke,
always had been a good friend of
mine and I thought it would be v.
pleasure to talk over old times.
But it was not Burke that turned
from the superintendent's, desk as I
entered the office. I stopped, gasped,
rubbed my eyes and -looked again.
The Elephant smiled as he came
forward to shake hands.
"Yep!" he said heartily. "ItV-
,ne!'l ". I
"Xo," he smiled in response, to Vnv
nuestiohing, "I'm not a ghost. By
rights, though, I 'spect I ought to

I shook myliead solemnly.
"I never expected ever to sec vom
again." I said. "How'd you escape?"
""Well," he replied, ruefully, "I
didn't exactly escape. You sec, 1

"Well.", he answered, a little apol
ogetically, "after that wreck I
couldn't run an engine any more.
But, somehow, the old man seemed
to think the road ought to take care
oi me. u anted to pension me, but
I wasn't dead, even with an arm and
t leg gone. So the old man com
promised on this."
We were silent for a few minutes,

seemed to grow a trifle sad.
"You know." he said, "it kind of
tti my goat. That was the only
wreck I ever had. And to think 1
deliberately caused it myself!"

Egg-Laying Contest
Keeps Nebraska Hens
On Job During Winter
Lincoln. Jan. .30. (Special.) The
hens in the nation-wide egg laying
contest being conducted by the Ne
braska college of agriculture are re
fusing to join in the customary win
ter strike. Twenty-three of them
laid 23 or more eggs each during
December; one laid 27 eggs and four
laid 26 each. During November ami
December, the, first two months of
the. present contest, one hen laid a
total of 50 eggs, and 10 laid 39 or
more eggs each.
Among the 23 high layers during
December were the following breeds:
seven White Leghorns, four While
Wvandnftrs. four While Orpingtons,
two White Tvbcks, twH Barred Rork.

Prpingtons. The highest layer and
the second highest layer were White
Orningtous.
Six hundred hens, representing
breeders in nine state, are entered
in the contest, the purpose of which
is to encourage the breeding of bet

Nearly 300 members of the Hamilton
county farm bureau have obtained
special blanks from the college of
agriculture for the purpose of keep
ing account of the cost of raisin.ee
corn, wheat, oats, hogs, cattle ami
poultry, and the operation of trac
tors. The calls lor the record blanks
came after the farm bureau member
ship campaign in that county.
Several farmers said they had de
cided to know definitely what it costs
to produce grain and stork, what
their profits and losses are, and
what their land is actually worth
as determined by it returns. Some
farmers purchased land during thet
boom and now are not sure that if.
is worth .vjhat they paid for it.
Others arc contemplating purchasing
land and desire to know its value
as an investment. Still others wish
to determine the most profitable
crops and the most economical mean
of production.
There is some question as to the
value of a tractor on a small farm,
especially when horses and feed arc
cheap.
