Pet Tabbies Put Air Mail Radio Out of Order . '-Sparks ami "Contact' Snort Cricuit Apparatus And Are Wearing Electrically Bob Led Ears as Result. - Twice iu recent month) the United States radio station here has been put out of commission temporarily, "awd each time a cat was responsible. The radio is used for transmission of important mrssages of the postal department at the air mail station. One time "Sparks" who gained ' this name by virtue of his contact with the powerful electrical appa ratus, was to blame, and the other tiny: "Contact," onother of several pot felines at the station, was guilty Of the offense. v , Were it not for the apparent penchant of the cats for the sparks ' that play about the electrical ap paratus in the room at the statkm where Radio Operator Gale each week received thousands of words bv ( wireless,, the two incidents probably would not have occurred. . But the cats' like to be in the electrical retain and the men in charge of the air mail station have to be on the alert to keep them out. Their alertness, however, failed to prevent the two accidents. Sparks got off lightly with his experience with electricity and was only "knocked out" for a short time. Contact, who was named "before he received, his baptism of electricity, got the'worst of it and was uncon scious for two houra afterwards. As a result of his experience, the cat's cars are a little shorter than those ' -of the average cat, the electrical current having burned them off until they are nothing more than stubs. Describing the " incidents, Oper ator Gale said that each time he Ipst all connection with the outside world as he sat at his desk with his radio headgear properly adjusted. He says he could not figure what had gone 'wrong until he looked around to see the form of a pros trate cat lying motionless upon the floor. , '. The cats had "short circuited" the apparatus.
