In getting out of bed in the morn
ing always take care to place thc
right toot first or the day will be un
lucky. Many otherwise ; intelligent
people also take care to place the
right foot first when entering a
house. The origin of the very com
mon superstition with regard tr the
right foot is easily accounted for by
association. It is a psychological
offspring of the word "right" ant, its
meaning of "in conformity "witrt
moral law, permitted by the prin
ciple which ounht to regulate con
duct," etc.
The word as applied to the Mc
of the human body which is toward
the east when the face is turned to
the north is of exactly the same
derivation and owes its present ap
plication to the fact that most peo
ple are "right-handed" and there
fore the right hand is the right hand
to do things with. And by exten
sion the word came to cover that
whole side of the body. And so io
getting out of bed if the right foot J
is right the loft foot must ho
wrong. Moreover the word loft is
from the Anglo-Saxon meaning
weak, worthless and, originally ap
plied to the left arm, has suffered
the same extension as the word right
over the one side of the body. Here
we have one of the many instance
of a physical fact, aided by the use
of words, transformed by mental as
sociation into a popular superstition.

Trying to evade the law, talking
against efforts of the . lawmakers,
with no real reason except to be a
kicker or to show that you card
little for"law and order is O show
that you belong to a low order of
mentality.
Know the laws, live up to them,
watch results and then cast your in
fluence to make others want to do
the same.

Do We Say That Something is,
"Taboo"? '
The English language, though de
rived in the majority of instance!
from the Anglo-Saxon and the Latin,
contains not a few words which, have
been introduced frpm other and far
less usual tongues. Among these
are several representatives of Malay
sian dialects, and "taboo" is typical
of this classification. . i
The word comes 4o us from New
Zealand and the South Sea Islands,
being the Maori tapu and the Poly
nesian tabu, meaning sacred. The
"tabu" was essentially a religiou
ceremony and could only be imposed
by the priests, but it was applied to
social and political a Talfs and to per-,
sons, place and things. Its prohi
bitions were far-reaching and Were
strictly enforced under penalty of
death, applying to almost every
thing, from sacrifices to the gods, to
the methods of preparing food.
Though the origin of many of the
prohibitions under the taboo are in
tricate and obscure, there is no rea
son to believe that they were the re
sult of mere caprice, and on the
whole their influence is considered
to have been beneficial upon races
which followed these "forbidden"
customs.
