Eight Men Killed
By Sinn Feincrs
In Dublin Fidit
Seven of .Victims Were Con'
stables Whose Car Ran Into
an Ambuscailc One Ci-
Dublin, Jan. 22. Eight men,
seven of whom were constables,
were shot and killed in engage
ments , with .Sinu Feiners near this
city yesterday Six of the con
stables met death when their motor
car ran into an-' ambuscade, while
the body of another was found
near the barracks of his squad yes
terday morning." The civilian slain
was shot by several men who en
tered his home.
Announcement has been made that
in future all motor cars carrying
constables, and therefore, likely to
he attacked, will carry members of
the Sinn Fein as hostage?. This
plan , has been in operation near
Cork, where martial law is in force,
and has, it is said, acted as a pre-
' vr-ntative of attacks oil pairs of con
stabulary. Two or three houses in Cork
were destroyed by ; British army
... engineers yesterday as an act of of
ficial reprisal for an attack made on
crowu forces in their neighborhood.
The buildinas were shattered by
dynamite, and reports reaching here
indicate several adjacent structures
were severely damaged.
Maj. Gen. Sir Edward Strick
land, commander of crown troops in
Ireland, stated yesterday at Cork
that martial law was producing
beneficial results but that only a
' handful of Irish republican leaders
had givert themselves up, and added
that hit men were most ,seriotisly
handicapped by the activities of wo
men .who were carrying arms to fu
gitive Sinn Feiners.'
Yesterday's ambush at Glcnwood,
in which District Inspector Clarke,
a sergeant and four constables were
killed and a sergeant and a con
stable were .wounded, occurred in
the afternoonlas, a party of 10 police
was patrolling 9. road skirted by a
wood. JProm , this cover a strong
