Romance in Origin Of Superstitions By H. IRVING KING. - ' Falling Pictures. ; A rather common superstition i that the falling of a portrait from! the wall where it is hanging por tends a death in the family. Soma even go so far as to regard as un lucky the accidental dropping of a photograph of a friend or relation. This is really traceable to the con nection which the primitive mind established between the symbol and what is represented, an idea which found one phase of its expression iii the belief of an intimate connection between a person and his image. If a symbol of one of the gods ac quired a reverence, and halt-worshii from its close connection with the immortal it represented, was it not natural, to suppose that a more or less intimate connection existed be-, tween a person and his "counterfeit; presentment?" It was this idea that, caused the necromancers of the; middle ages to "get square" with the enemies of themselves or their, patrons by making' a rag doll to represent the 'aforesaid enemy and: sticking it full of pins, or a wax doll' and letting it melt before a fire, thereby claiming to cause, by sym-, pathetic magic, illness, perhaps death, to -the victim. The ideas of, our cave man ancestors and our mediaeval forbears lingering, deep; in our "unconscious" ego, cause some of us to establish, therefore,, a close connection between a person and his portrait Now, when that portrait falls we get that form or. symbolism which causes one not to suggest another. The picture falls from its place, the original falls from his place dies. Strictly it ought to be that way hut, pcihanH, the original of the portrait is al- ready dead and, being broad minded persons and not a bit superstitious, we say: "Well, if not that person nhi- enmrhiidv we know: some member of the family, .probably i indicated. It's a bad sign anyway." Copyright, 1131. By the MaCTurs Newspaper . t Syndicate. Common Sense By J. J. MUNDY. Tell 'Em So. Too few are familiar with suitable words of commendation. The person who docs a certain piece of work in a satisfactory man ner deserves a word of appreciation and a truthful discriminating word now and then helps to make work easier.1; . . Compliments should be given, but so should censure, where it is de served. The employer who does not say anything when the work displease him, but retains the thought in his own mind of its inferiority, is do ing ail injustice to himself and the employe, whom he deceives int thinking he has given satisfaction.
