Romance in Origin
Of Superstitions
By H. IRVING KING.
Stumbling.
The idea that it is bad luck to
stumble when setting out upon any
new enterprise is a very old super
stition easily explained by psychol
ogy. It is one of which there are
a great number which arises from
natural symbolism. Stumbling 's
the natural symbol of poorly direct
ed action and the word is so em
ployed in popular speech as: 'He
stumbled into a hornet's nest,' to
signify blundering into trouuiet or
"W chnmhiprl into a ood thine." to
signify that he succeeded only by
accident ...
The primitive mind, still active
m man no matter now ovwsru
may be, and natural superstitions,
make , the analogy instinctive, and
hence the superstition, it a man
stumbles on the threshold of a new
enterprise the outcome of the enter
prise is doubtful; if h stumbles
and falls it Is doomed to failure.
The story is well known ot now
William the Comjueror. mindful ot
the superstition, when he stumbleu
and fell upon leaping ashore in Eng
land, answered the cry that went up
from his soldiers that it was a baU
omen by grabbing the sand and
crying out: "l have taken rteuin
of this land with both hands. There
is a similar story of the landing oi
Caesar in Africa. But if Caesar and
William scorned this hoary supersti
tion Sir Walter Scott did not. when
Murvgo Park, previous to his last
and fatal expedition to Africa, was
taking leave of Sir Wtlter. his horse
stumbled. A bad sign," said Scott,
"I shall never see him again." And
he didn't. Of, course, Riven a suffi
cient number of sttimblitiRS, the su
perstition is bound to work out
sometimes. And then eopl say,
