Holding a Husband
Adele Garrison's New Phase of
Revelations of a Wife
the Way Dickey Took Major Grant
, land's Great Care of Madge.
Something in my father's hesitat
ing manner made me- wonder if lie
feared any special danger for me. I
had known him to have the same t
manner before, nvhen he wished to
rwarn me of something he feared and
did not know just how to put his
fear1 into words lest he might unduly
alarm in i
"You know I'd love toiave yrrz
go with us. father, dear." I said, "but
the place I need you most is right
here with, this blessed fiahy. With
you and Mother Graham both
watching over him f can ro at that
herculean task ahead of me without
worrvingmore than three-fourths of
the time."
I smiled rogueishly at him, but his
answering ' smile was abstracted.
Plainly, his thoughts were on some
thing "far different than Junior's wel
fare, vital as I knew that was lo
him.
"Dicky is going with you, after all,
isn't he?" Ire asked finally. '
.Yes, they are selling tickets
through now," I replied.
V Something Goes Wrong.
' "And Major Grantland?"
"I do not know. I have the im
prcssion that he is going North to
niphl, but he hasn't said so."
"Does Mrs- Underwood know you
are coming?"
' Jiis utterance of thf, name brought
me the consciousness of something
important left undone.
"No, she doesn't,"' I replied, "and
I want her to knoA but haven't had
time to think of it. Would you mind
sending her, telegram saying w
i!l arrive m New York sometime
tomorrow afternoon or evening? You
can get the train and 'reservation?
from Major Grantland. I think I beai1
him comings back now."
"I'll attend to it right- away," lie
said, with a curious little air of re
lief. He moved toward the door,
hesitated, came back to me, and put
his hands on my cheeks, turning my
face up to his.
"My darling," he., said. "I wish
it were possible for you to have Mrs.
Underwood .with you while vou are
tearing up that house and hunting
for atiother one. Try to arrange! it
if you can. And promise me that
in your search for a new home you
will go nowhere alone."
His voice was low, impressive, and
try asI; would I could not look upon
the request as only the undue paren
tal anxiety of an old man . I thriller!
to-the suggestion jof something ahead
of me which my father feared, ani
it made, my voice earnest as I an
swered him. f , . ' vN
"I'll promise, father, deaf, and
keen it."
"That's my good gifl." He kissed
me, and hurried away again, and in
another'mintite I heard his voice
and that of Major Grantland in the
hall, i, . - . '- ' , ' '
The next half hour was a swirl t
me. Hastily adieux, the gathering
up of luggagej another drive through
the night, wUich began 'as' swiftly
as the first, but which sdon slowed
up. I saw the chauffeur give sevv
era,I furtive glatrCes at Major Grant
land, who .was again at the Wheel,
heard a jaucer nofse jn the engine
which I had not heard before, and
did not need Dicky's whisper to tell
me something was wrong.
In a Difficult Position. '
"Something's gone flooey with ths
cylinders," Dickey muttered. "She's
only hitting on about half of 'em.
'Wonder if he'll try to keep on to
Southern Cedars with the old bps
limping this way, or whether he'll,
f ut into some nearer port."
We had not long to jvait for the
answer to hi question. Aftr a lo
voiced colloquy, betwern Majof
Grantland and his chauffeur the" of
ficer flowed down, swung the car to
thfr side of the road ana stopped.
' "We'll have to look over things it'
bit before we go further," he ex
plained as he alighted. -'
The two men looked and explored
and consulted, and finally the" chauf
feur got out some tools and pro-
ceeded ti ao certain things to the
mechanism mysterious to me. hut
evidently comprehensible to Dicky,
who had alighted wnVf he others
did, and closely ovalched their
maneijvers. When the work was fin
ished Major Grantland climbed into
the car again and started it, listen
ing carefully t tre engine as he
did so.
"All rinht get in." he called to
the chauffeur and Dicky, and then
he turned to me., "I am more sorry
than I can say, Mrs. Graham, that
I shall not be able to lake you back
to Southern Cedars, hut I dar? not
trust the car any farther-than Aber
deen." . -
"But,I don't mind in the least," I
protested. "What difference does it V
make?"
"A great deal," he said. "At South
ern Cedars you would have had a
comfortable hotel in which to wait.
At Aberdeen you will have to sit on
a bench in the 'waiting rocn until
the twin comes."
"It isn't the first time I have
waited upon a . station beii':h for a
train," I said reassuringly.' t
"But it will probably be the last
time you'll everwant to see one."
Dicky imerrunred caustically'. "I
have a hunch that the train is-going
to break all records for lateness to
night." f
"I am afraid pot," Major Grant
land said quietly, and in their tones
I sensed the old tension between the
two men. .Again I realized that I
must be niost Careful not to rouse
the jealousy of the officer which al
ways seems to lie near the sur
face of Dicky's emotions. ' ,
