The sensation which we charac terize as "smell" is, in reality, a tickling or irritation of certain nerves in the nose, nerves which are extremely sensitive to the gaa or disturbance or vibration given off by certain objects for the precise nature of an "odor" is something which science, in spite of its many discoveries, has yet to solve. Two tilings arc therefore necessary to produce a "smell;" A pas (for want of a better name) given oft by the object itself, and the ability of this gas to register on the nerves of the nose. Just as some persons can see bet ter than others, some have the sense of smell developed to a particularly high degree, and for this reason, it is difficult to say that sonif? things ' have no, smell at all." The odor may not be apparent- to us, :iut tliert might be others who would recog nize it at once. The highly- special ized nostrils of dogs and other four footed animals arc excellent ex amples of this, while there are som birds notably canaries which can detect odor which human nerves or' smell would never note. This difference in the amount of "gas" given off, by objects is what leads us to the conclusion that tome things are quite odorous while oth ers apparently have no smell a all, while it is really nothing more than our own inability to recognize the odor or to separate it from ihe oth ers which are constantly around us. Copyright, 1920, by Wheeler Syndicate. Inc PM THE GUY who always greets your remarks with "That reminds, me." . Well, supposing I do? , What you were beginning to speak brought back to me a good story, or a really funny joke, or some ex perience that I'm sure will interest you. So in order not to forget it, I break rigght into your narrative and speak my little piece. You see, I simply can't wait the story is too good to keep. Perhaps you don't think so; but I'm absolute ly sure of it. Besides I don't like to see you hogging all the talk. You know, you're not making a campaign speech, or giving a monologue. This is supposed to be common talk anyone can join in. So since I am not passing up any chance, I ease right in to the chatter. Don't look at me in that scowling way which you think will crush me. It doesn't even reach me. And don't try to interrupt me in order to continue with what you were saying. Where It Started Divorce. The most primitive people held that a husband could repudiate his wife at will. This was gradually modified, till separations Could be obtained for cause. The hearing of cases came to be a function of the courts, and laws grew and adapted themselves till a special code of di vorce laws was framed,' with a spe cial court to handle the cases. In England, in 1857, the first real di vorce court was established by act cf parliament. Copyright, 1921 by Wheeler Syndicate, Inc, Britain and France Agree On German Disarmament Paris, Jan. 6. Great Britain and France are in close accord relative to the subject of German disarma ment and reparations, says the Lon don correspondent of the Matin in discussing the meeting of allied pre miers to be held here January 10 He adds the British cabinet still favors granting Germany some time in which to bring about the dis bandment of civil guards, but has taken the attitude that the allies should demand immediate delivery of all secret processes for the manu facture of explosives and poison gas.
