Jan. 2. During his recent short sojourn in Paris on his way to London King Alfonso of Spain was the indirect cause of many people here losing money. An enthusiast of horse racing. King Alfonso could not spend a Sunday in Paris without taking a fly ing trip to the Auteuil race track, where jumping events were taking plajce. He arrived' there just before the third race and superstitious bet 'tnrc in lookinar at their cards found that a horse imported from Spain and running for its Spanish owner was down for the third race. Seems a coincidence in this, there was a rush for the betting booths to play Courey, the Spa..ish-bred horse, bringing the hettinng price on this horse down from 10 to I to 2 to 1. Courey followed the large field of jumpers all round the track, but fin ished unplaced. Eight Guests at Wedding Performed in Airplane Calcutta, India (By mail.) A wed ding, unique not so much from the fact that it took place in the air, but that eight guests in addition to the parson and the best man were in the machine, was celebrated in a Hand-ley-Page aeroplane flying over Cal cutta. The ceremony, when Miss vera Garner was married to C. H. Mann, took place when the machine was a mile from the ground. Capt. F. R. Stachard, a friend of thr bride and groom, was at the wheel. The Rev. J. H. Eastcrbrook was the officiating clergyman. The flight was no new novelty for him, as he was on active service in France nad made several flights there. A large number of guests remained on the ground, watching the machine, which climbed remarkably fast, and reacned 6,000 feet in 45 minutes. The engnie was then shut off and the ceremony commenced as the air plane began to glide to earth. The words of the service were perfectly audible, and the happy couple were man and wife well before the ma chine returned to earth. The whole flight occupied about one hour.
