( : THIS OMAHA SUNDAY BEE: JANUARY 2, 1921. 4 A 1 iTwenty-Four Face Trial for Murder In .West Virginia Principals in Gun II at tic in Mining Town of Matcwan Last May Will Be Tried January 19. Williamson, W. Va., Jan. 1. The atmosphere throughout the. coal mining region of West Virginia is growing more and more tense as the clay for the murder trials arising from last May's great gun battle in Matcwan, Mingo county, draws near. These trials are to vegin on Janu Srv 19. Here in Williamson 24 men will be arraigned before the satpe bar of justice, all on a charge of murder, while in Greenbrier county five These trials arc to begin on Janu charge. . . ' Many Town Officers. 'the trials, especially the one of two dozrti men here, most, of them i town officials of Matcwan, including Chief of Police Sid Hatfield, are ex pected to be the most dramatic legal chapters of the long story of indus trial warfare in West Virginia. ' '1 he 24 men are accused of having shot dead seven of 12 detectives who had been evicting union miners and their families, driving them out in some instances on only 10 minutes' notice into the mountains, where 10,000 men, women and, children are now living in tent colonies. Face Murder Charge. The five surviving detectives are charged with the nnirder of C. C. Tcstennan, mayor of Matcwan. Ex traordinary precautions are expected to be-taken by the state and county authorities to prevent violence at and during the trials. , , In some quarters it is-believed the battalion of government troops now patrolling the mine-war region will be considerably reinforced when the trials open.
