A total of 62.176,000 bushels of
grain were received and 54,743,700
hushels were shipped out by th!
Omaha Grain Exchang; during tho
year just closed.
Wheat receipts at Omaha in 1920
were 24,786,000 bushels, against 23,-000,000-
ushels in 1919. Corn arri
vals totaled 20,277,000 bushels as
compared to 23,000,000 bushels the
vear previous.
A total of 13,982,000 bushels of
oats were received, while 14,500,000
bushels represented the receipts in
1919. Total rye receipts for the
year just closed were 1,969,000 bush
els, compared to 1,450,000 bushels
the preceding year. Barley receipts
were 1,162,800 bushels as compared
16 2,635,000 bushels in 1919.
Receipts Lighter Than Average,
For the past two vears receipts
at all terminal markets have been
lighter than the average for a num
ber ot years before, several factors
have contributed to the decrease. In
1919 embargoes, a' car shortage and
a short crop of corn grown in 1918
were the main causes. During the
early part of 1920 the car shortage
Ftilliaffectcd the crop movement and
caused farmers to feed much ot their
grain, particularly corn, that other
wise would have reached primary
points, grain men say.
And finally, the big drop in com
prices this fall has caused many
farmers to hold their grain either
lo teed or for better figures. Since
a large part of the corn crop does
not ordinarily reach, terminal mar
kets in volume until January and
February, however, the record corn
crop raised the past season may be
reflected in very large receipts of
this cereal during the next month
or two, grain men say. The volume
will largely depend upon whether
corn prices make material advances
from present levels, however.
Second Largest Corn Market.
In the meantime Omaha retains
her position, held for a number of
years, as the second largest corn
market of the world.
Likewise the continued progress
of the Omaha Grain Exchange is as
sured. This market is situated in the
heart of the richest agricultural dis
trict in the world. In the states di
rectly tributary to the Omaha market
there was produced in 1920 almost
half of all the grain grown in the
United States.
Omaha, in addition, is the only
strictly primary market in the United
States. Practically all of her receipts
are directiy from the farm, while ar
rivals at other terminals come to a
large extent from other markets.
Moreover, Omaha ships grain to
every section of the country and
large shipments from this market go
directly to the seaboard for export.

Cases Show Increase
There were 1,403 suits filed for
divorce in t,he office of the clerk
of the district court in 1919 and
1,419 in 1920. There were 235 per
sonal injury suits filed in l'19 and
308 in 1920. Total number of civil
cases of all kinds filed in 1P19 was
3,286, as against 3.427 in 1920.
Total number of criminal cases in
1919 was 1,064 and 980 in 1920.
There were 1,022 divorce decrees
granted in 1919 and 1.029 in 1920.
Fifty-five thousand dollars in ali
mony was received and paid out
through this office in 1920.
The total number of civil caes
tried by jury in 1920 was 209 Out
of this "number 139 verdicts were
returned in favor of the defendants.
57 in favor of the plaintiffs and
there were 13 disagreements.

Cost Total of $230,500 in '20
"An expenditure of $230,500 during
1920 in Omaha is recorded by the
United States navy, according to
Capt. J. H. Comfort, naval inspec
tor for the middle western states.
That amount includes salaries of
officers and enlisted men on recruit
ing duty in Omaha and the living
expenses of offices.

market passed through an eventful
period through a period of read
justment following the war durinp
which values were driven up to
dizzy heights far beyond their trUr
levels. Just as sharp as had beer,
the advance earlier in the year, jui
so sharp were the declines whicl
followed when stocks were driven
down to their true levels. In fact,
so precipitate did the decline be
come that toward the latter part ti
the year in November bany fs
sues were forced down far below
their intrinsic values.
The advance in prices can easib
be traced to the natural effect oi
war conditions. Salaries were high
money was plentiful. Speculation
was rampant. Everybody, seemed
imbued with the fever to invest
money into something that would
bring immediate and big returns.
The people had to have sonic out
let for their excess funds and tbe
gtock market furnished the mediurii.
An era of luxury buying set ki.
Everything shot up to unheard el
prices.
Gambling and "speculating in food
stuffs and other necessities began,
with the public being forced to foot
the bill. Such inflated conditions,
however, could not long exist. The
country had to get back on a peace
basis, the pu&iic went on a suert i
"strike" against the high cost tf j
living. It was not an organized

protest against the exhoroitatu
prices. The Federal Reserve banks
came to the relief of the public l,y
increasing its discount rate.. This
materially checked the wild, specu
lation and tended to throw on the
market much of the necessities that
had been hoarded. ' ",
High Prices Drop. k I
The outpouring of the hoajfded
goods, as well as a falling off ir the
demand of the public, quickly com
pelled a reduction in prices. Th(
Strike" of the public caused a slump
in the business world. Industrial
nlants hv the score bcean reducinc
their production, cutting down their
number of emploves and violently
slashing wages. This was particu
larly true in the textile, automobile,
tire, independent steel and copper in
dustries. Concerns were caught
loaded up with commodities at the
high levels and as a result annual
inventories were effected at enor
mous losses. Extra financing was
needed by many and a number of
corporations had to pay big rates of
interest to secure ' accommodation.
Money was at a premium with banks
demanding the most gilt-edged se
curity. There was a heavy enlarge
ment in bankruptcies and approxi
mately 7,000 concerns with liabili
ties estimated at over $300,000,000,
are estimated to have gone-, touthe
wall during 1920. Scores of corpora
tions were torced to either cut
entirely suspend their dividends.
Stocks Forced Down. 1
Naturally, this period of transition
in the industrial world was reflect
ed on the stock market in a sharp
downward movement in yalues from
the hight to.., which they had ben
driven by the public's fevered imag
ination. Industrial issues led the vio
lent declines !
The railroad stocks were helped nn
the early part of the year by the in
creased freight and passenger rates
granted by the government and by
the passage of the Cummins-Esfcfc
bill prohibiting strikes of the rail
road workers. Talk of segregation
by many railroads of their old, coal
and timber holdings contributed 4o
the upturn in this group. However,
the stagnation in the business world
was soon reflected in a marked de
crease in railroad earnings and this
class of stocks shared in the late
year decline. i
