With poultry breeder, as with suc-
ssful mm in almost every walk of
lift or line of endeavor, it is the
man with a hobby who achieves the
greatest measure of success. As a
Ronera! rule the successful poultry
breeder has a pronounced favor for
some certain breed of bird, and by
voars of unremitting attent.on,

today, the poultry industry has so
many la-nous strains. There are
Fishel White Rocks. Sheppard An
conas. lienderson Barred Rocks,
Kojjers White Leghorns. Keeler
White Wyandotts and numerous
other strains that can be pointed to
as a direct result of this general
rule.
There seems to be a disposition on
the pr.rt of poultry feed manufac
turers to eliminate as much of the
"tnysttrious" from their products as
possible. For exampleone manu
facturer recently advisea the writer
that he was perfectly willing to
place the formula for mash feed up
on the bag, so that every one would
know the exact amount of the vari
ous ingredients used. Another
manufacturer advocates the placing
upon the bag, the amount of diges
tible protein, instead of protein as
is now required. This would seem
a very excellent plan. Let the hag
tell of the digestibility of the feed
as that is generally the chief con
cern of the feeder.
Changes are coming on very rap
idlv in jhe poultry industry. Only
a few years ago the idea of elec
tricity aiding egg product'on was
considered ridiculous. Today it is
an acknowledged fact that hens do
etter work when the daytime is
fenirthened bv artificial lieht. To
place hens on a summer schedule
by means of lengthening the day
has proven a method b"' which win
ter egg production can be greatly
enhanced. 1
Poultry, Show at York
One of the Largest
Ever Held in State
York, Neb., Dec. 19. (Special.)
The Central Nebraska association
closed their second annual meeting
here. It is stid to be the largest
and best poultry show evcr held in
the state. There was 63 cockrels in
the singlecomb Rhode Island red
class on exhibition and more than J
600 birds tn the other classes.
E. C. Bishop of Bradshaw, form
erly connected with th:, agricultural
college of Ames, la., delivered an
address on the importance of the
Boys' and Girls' poultry club at the
annual banquet, Mr Bishop recom
mended the club and stated a num
ber of instances where it has been a
great success. C. O. Hudson, secre
tary of the association brought out
not only the importance, but what it
will mean to the industry in the fu
ture. Mr. Hudson for two years
was connected ' with the United
States Burau of Agriculture and
gave many interesting "examples of

Cold weather is not conductive to
egg production. Perhaps electric
ity, having solved the problem of
lengthening; the hen's daylight, will
come forward as a practical means
of heating prultry houses. Heated
poultry holies are not advocated at
present simply because present me
thods of heating are not practical.

method by which an even tempera
ture may be maintained in all parts
cf the poultry house at a cost with
in reason and you will hear very few
objections from poultnymen provid

Guard against dampness in the
poultry house. It is the cause of
colds and croup and mopishness
among fowls Be sure that the lit
ter is dry. Damp litter is a lice
breeding place. ' If your poultry
house is inclined to dampness anil
you arc unable to entirely eliminate
this condition, it would be advisable
to keep, some good rcup remedy
ever present in the drinking water.
Frozen or frosted combs and wat
tles are common at this season.
Freezing of the hear gear is large
ly a matter of poor condition of the
b;rd, and dampness with sudden
changes of temperature. Exposure
to severe cold winds when head gear
is wet with drinking water parti
cularly warm water is a common
cause of freezing. For treatment
thaw out the frosted parts by rub
bing with cold petrolatum; then ap
ply a mixture of one ounce of sweet
oil with one teaspoonful spirits of
turpentine. Apply d.i'ly. Do not
take the bird into a warm .room.

D. S. Yarges is being held in the
county jail here in default of $5,000
bonds while his transactions with
Fillmore county farmers are being
investigated. The county attorney
alleges that in selling options on
lumber to farmers near Milligan hp
gave contracts containing a "joker"
clause. He was given a preliminary
hearing in county court on charges
of obtaining money under false pre
tenses and bound over to the district
court. R. W. Barton, who drove the
automobile in which Yarges toured
the county, is being held as a wit
ness.. Yarges is said to have accept
ed either notes or cash for the op

Predicts Boom for 1921

T.he foundations for almost any period of
prosperity are laid in times of depression. The
prosperity is merely the superstructure ; the foun
dations are the thrift, conservatism, and sound
financial conditions brought about by adversity.
The chief characteristics of a business depression
are the marking down of fictitious values, and the
paying off of excessive debts; and it is just such
things as these that pave the way for a boom in
business. '
The more look at the present actual con
ditions, the more impressed we become with the
evidence that another boom is on the way and is
not so very far of f. ' .
All of us know in a general theoretical way,
that thejthree great essentials required to make a -nation
productive and prosperous are an abund
ance of capital, both liquid and fixed; a suffi
ciency of labor, skilled and unskilled; and an
abundance oil raw materials at moderate costs.
Yet td most people the thought has never come
that these three essentials are as important in the
routine of the practical business man as in the ."
theory of the economist. As a matter of fact, our
years of prosperity are those in which these three
essentials are present, and our times of adversity '
are invariably marked by the absence of one or
more of these essentials.
One may truthfully say that when these
three things are in good supply we are certain of -prosperity
regardless of anything else except war
and pestilence.
One should not, however, expect a business
revival'too soon. The first quarter of the year
will doubtless be' extremely depressed, and it is
not certain that much improvement will be shown
in the second 'quarter. It will take time to sell off
these high cost products now on hand, and to re
store the depleted purchasing power of the pub
lic. But by the third quarter of the year pos
sibly in the second quarter we ought to begin to
feel the beneficial effects of . these powerful
economic forces which already definitely promise
us another boom in business.
When everything goes wrong, the Bible
oftentimes can supply us with consolation. 'One .
text which many of us could profitably meditate
on today is: "Sorrow lasteth for a night. Joy
cometh in the morning." There is much anguish
in the business world at this moment Falling
prices, cancelled orders, diminishing sales, matur
ing obligations, credit scarcity, commercial fail
ures, unemployment, pessimism all these are
being experienced daily. However, indications
increase that we are now at or nearing the mid
night hour of our night of gloom, and that day
light will shortly dawn.
Leading bankers, I find, almost all agrerthat
the worst has already befallen. They don't look
for immediate recovery; they expect the unssttle
ment to last until the turn of the year, with, how
ever, incipient manifestations of firmness here
and there, and then a distinct revival very early "
in the new year. November usually is the month
of greatest monetary stringency. While December
may not bring any appreciable relief, January is
counted upon to do so. Wtiat the situation calls,
for is not a renewal of credit expansion, but for x
orderly readjustment all along the lie until an
equitable, stable price level has been established.
This is exactly what we are likely to experience.
The winter months may be rather dark, but
spring should bring cheerfulness.
